“Ants Marching” is a song by American rock band Dave Matthews Band. It was released in September 1995 as the second single from their 1994 studio album Under the Table and Dreaming. The song’s lyrics were written by vocalist and guitarist Dave Matthews, while its music was composed by bassist Stefan Lessard, keyboard player Peter Griesar (the latter left the band in 1993), and drummer Carter Beauford. The song has been performed live by the band on many occasions since 1994, with its first known performance being at a private party in Charlottesville, Virginia on January 22 of that year. It has also appeared on multiple concert albums as well as one compilation album.
I watch the mob across the street as I try to sleep
I watch the mob across the street as I try to sleep.
A cat screams in the alley of some invisible pain,
and trouble sleeping comes to town when you’re around.
A cat screams in the alley of some invisible pain
A cat screams in the alley of some invisible pain.
It’s a gray cat, with black spots and a gray tail. It’s trying to hide behind an old barrel on the end of the street, but I can see it very clearly through the window. It seems scared, but angry too; as if someone has made fun of it or hurt its feelings somehow. The way it hisses at me makes me think that this might be true—that it feels itself mocked by what is happening around it and cannot understand why no one else cares enough to intervene (or even notice).
Its eyes are like blue ribbons tied around two different ends of an arrowhead; ones that point towards each other so there is no place for them to go except into each other’s gaze upon impact—which will happen soon because we’re drawn together by these shared visions of pain until we hit each other hard enough for us both to break apart into pieces: one person holding onto something valuable while another carries away anything worth keeping—all depending on where fate decides their paths will intersect again down along each road leading elsewhere from here where everything seems just fine now though maybe not later when you wake up from dreaming about being eaten alive by ants marching over your face while they cover your entire body with tiny red bites all over until they’ve gotten bored eating off bits at random places then move onto somewhere else instead leaving behind only traces behind which means there wouldn’t even be any evidence left pointing towards where ever went wrong here at least not anymore not after such time passes by
The world is a barrel of monkeys I could do without
Are we still in the world of barrels? If so, please let me know. I feel like this song is about monkeys and barrels, but I can’t remember how it goes. This reminds me of when my friend was at a party in his basement and all of a sudden an ant came crawling out of the floorboard next to him. Then another ant crawled out, then another one after that—and then they just kept coming! Soon there were hundreds of ants marching around on the ground around him. He ran upstairs as fast as he could go and told everyone else in his family what had happened down there; they were all pretty freaked out too because who knows what kind of disease those ants might have been carrying with them! And also even though it sounds crazy saying that when you’re around trouble sleeping comes to town…when you’re around trouble sleeping comes to town…all my movements make me feel like I’m out of town!”
When we got back home later that night our entire house had been flooded with water from overflowing toilets or something weird like that (it might have been something different).
And trouble sleeping comes to town when you’re around
And trouble sleeping comes to town when you’re around
The world is a barrel of monkeys I could do without
When you’re around, my eyes are stained with mud that was once color
But I’m going to forget all about it today.
When you’re around
When you’re around
I’m happy as can be.
You’re all that I need, and more.
When you’re around me, it’s easy to see why.
Your smile is like sunshine on a summer day.
I love spending time with you, because when I do:
- You make me feel good about myself in ways that others never have before (this is where the lyrics get very personal).
- You are so beautiful it takes my breath away every time I look at you or think about being with you again soon (again, this part might be too personal).
- Your laugh makes me melt into a puddle of goo at your feet!
All my movements make me feel like I’m out of town
The song is about a man who is waiting for his wife to come back home. He feels like he’s out of town because they are so far away from each other. He misses her, but he knows that she will come back soon.
I stay out too late, get up too early
- I stay out too late, get up too early, been going through my mind
- Well, I went to the doctor and he said you know son you got ants in your pants
- Got to shake them loose baby go ahead and give it a try
- You’ve got ants in your pants (ants in the pants)They’re making you crazy (make you crazy)And they won’t go away (will not go away)Well there’s only one thing left to do: shake em! Shake em! Baby!
My eyes are stained with mud that was once color
My eyes are stained with mud that was once color
Stained by the years, their color has been taken from them.
The path we have travelled has become so familiar, it’s hard to look away from the road ahead of us.
But I’m going to forget all about it today
But I’m going to forget all about it today. It’s a new day, and I’m going to be so happy and excited for what is coming my way.
I’ve got a good feeling that something amazing will happen today, like maybe winning the lottery or finding out you have a long-lost family member who wants to give you lots of money!
And steal away with you today like there’s nothing else to do
- The song is about stealing away with someone.
- The song is about stealing away with someone and doing nothing else all day.
- The song is about stealing away with someone and doing nothing else all day and night.
Doo doo doo doo doo doodoo doodoo
- Doo doo doo doo doo doodoo doodoo
- The ants marching song is a metaphor for life. The ants march is a metaphor for the human condition. It’s a metaphor for the human soul. And it’s also a metaphor for the human spirit, which we’ll discuss in more detail later on in this article.

Verse
The verse is a great place to start if you are a beginner at the piano. It’s easy to play and has just enough complexity to teach you some of the basics.
The verse is in 4/4 time, meaning there are four beats per measure (measure = bar). Each quarter note gets one beat; each eighth note gets half of a beat (or two quarter notes). The time signature tells us how many beats per measure there are: 4/4 means four quarter notes per bar (also called “four over four”).
Conclusion
The song is a fun and upbeat, with a sing-along chorus that makes it great for parties. The lyrics are witty and clever, comparing ants marching to people walking around with their jobs, hobbies, etc., and the message is one of hope that we can all get along in our lives despite all the crazy stuff going on.
