How to get rid of fleas on cats? There are so many different remedies that it can be quite overwhelming. Things like diatomaceous earth, baking soda, garlic and others have their different uses and I would recommend you try them all. I will be writing my own series of posts to cover the various home remedies for fleas and this first part will focus on what kills fleas on contact. Aches and pains, itching, and other health issues are all a part of life, but not necessarily in that specific order. These things can come on suddenly, when we least expect it. More often than not, you’ll find it difficult to determine what’s bothering you or your pet. The most common causes of your discomfort are flea bite hypersensitivity and fleas themselves. But what are some home remedies to get rid of fleas for cats? I have more trouble with fleas than mice. I have a cat, and I love my cat. Fluffy gets the best of everything, but when it comes to fleas, it hasn’t been so easy. A recent trip to doggy daycare got her full of fleas just two months after her last one whopper batch came home with me. It’s a shame they never caught them all because Fluffy came back from dog daycare itching so badly that she scratched all night long and bled from trying to get them out.

Salt/Diatomaceous Earth
The next home remedy to get rid of fleas on your cat is salt. This natural repellent works by dehydrating the fleas, which will eventually kill them. It is an effective method to use when you want to keep your pets protected from these nasty little bugs that can cause a lot of discomfort and irritation for your cats.
Salt will not harm your cat if used properly, so it’s safe for both dogs and cats alike! However, if they lick their fur after you apply it then they may experience some stomach issues but this shouldn’t be a big deal if they don’t lick their fur too much. You can use table or sea salt as long as it doesn’t have any additives or artificial ingredients added into them (many brands add coloring agents). If you have loose powder around the house then give that a try instead because these types are even cheaper than pre-packaged varieties found at stores like Walmart or Target; however just make sure not to inhale too deeply when opening up containers because dust particles might get inside lungs which will make breathing difficult later on down road—we’re talking about sneezing fits here folks! We’re back again with another tip: Use diatomaceous earth (DE) instead since DE works great against lice infestations too; no need wasting money buying special shampoo just yet though since this method works just fine if given enough time before getting washed off completely.”
Rosemary
Rosemary is a great home remedy to get rid of fleas on cats. Rosemary is a natural flea repellent that can be used in many ways to keep your cat free of these pesky pests.
- Put rosemary leaves in your cat’s bedding or where they like to lay down often, such as the floor or their favorite chair. This will help repel the fleas from that area and keep them away from your pet at night when it’s most active.
- Sprinkle fresh, dried rosemary leaves on food for extra flavor and flea protection (just make sure not to give too much). You can also try adding this herb into some homemade treats for an even tastier way of keeping those pesky bugs away from kitty!
- Try making an herbal spray out of rosemary oil mixed with water and apply directly onto the fur coat (or skin) of your furry friend for best results when dealing with a serious infestation issue(s).
Lemon
Lemon is a natural flea repellent, and it can also be used as a natural shampoo to treat flea bites. Cats who are allergic to the citrus scent of lemons may not appreciate being sprayed with it, but most cats will tolerate it just fine.
- Squeeze some lemon juice into your cat’s bath water as you fill up the tub. This will help get rid of any existing fleas and prevent new ones from hitching a ride on your cat before they start biting.
- Use the juice from one lemon in 1 cup of water to make a spray that kills fleas on contact. Spray this mixture directly onto your cat’s fur to kill any pests that have made their way onto their body without having much effect on the animal itself (unless he or she happens to have allergies).
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a natural flea killer and repellent. It can kill fleas on your cat’s skin and prevent them from biting again.
To use apple cider vinegar as a flea killer, you need to follow these steps:
- Mix 1 cup of water with 2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle.
- Spray the solution on the cat’s fur, making sure that you spray all around its body including its ears, tail, neck and paws. You should also be careful not to get any solution inside your cat’s eyes or mouth as it can cause irritation if they get into those areas!
- Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with clean water
Essential Oils
Essential oils are natural oils extracted from plants, trees and flowers. Fragrance oils are synthetic fragrances that are not always safe or healthy for your cat. Essential oils can be toxic if used incorrectly; for example, eucalyptus oil should never be used on cats because it is toxic to them. Essential oils may also be toxic to dogs as well as cats – some even contain poison!
Most essential oils have no effect on fleas and some even make matters worse by repelling fleas instead of attracting them like normal insecticides do. Some essential oils can cause allergic reactions in both humans and animals, so avoid using them at all costs!
Vinegar and Borax mixture
- Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of borax.
- Sprinkle the mixture on your pet’s coat and let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Wash your pet with shampoo and rinse thoroughly, then repeat the process every few days until all fleas are gone.

- Try washing your cat and dog with an herbal flea shampoo or a flea comb and see if that helps eliminate the problem. Adding vinegar to the water is also said to be effective as it repels fleas off of your pets’ fur.
- Baking soda can be used as a shampoo for both cats and dogs because it kills all types of insects like ticks, lice and mites as well as fleas when mixed with water in equal parts into the tub or basin where your pet will be bathed in order to protect themselves against these pests while still being able to enjoy their favorite pastime which is playing around outside during summer months when there are no allergies present due to pollen levels being high at this time so not only do we need something natural but also something safe without any chemicals added so try using baking soda instead!
