Natural Remedies Ants
Ants 101
Ants are social insects, meaning they live in colonies with a queen ant and workers. Ants have three different castes: worker ants, queen ants (the reproductive females), and drone ants (the male reproductive). The queen ant is the only egg-laying member of the colony; all other members of the colony serve to help her reproduce.
The size of an ant colony can vary greatly depending on its species. Some small species have just one or two queens per nest but some larger species have hundreds or even thousands of queens in a single nest!
How to Get Rid of Ants Naturally
If you want to get rid of ants naturally, it’s important to first eliminate their food source. If there is food available outside your home, the ants will continue to come. You can also use natural remedies to kill the ants that are already inside your home.
To prevent ants from entering your home, seal cracks around doors and windows with caulk or silicone sealant so that no more can enter through these cracks. In addition to this method for preventing entry through cracks in walls and doors, keep food covered when not being used as well as cleaned up immediately after meals so there are no crumbs left behind by insects such as flies or other insects that might attract them into your home.
Natural remedies include using mint leaves surrounding entrances where they may be coming in from outside; peppermint oil sprayed on them will keep them away if they have already invaded some areas of your house; lavender oil mixed with water and sprayed throughout places where they may be coming inside will also help deter them from invading further; sprinkle cinnamon powder near entrances where they might be trying to gain entry via walls or doors (you can put cinnamon oil directly on their bodies).
Homemade Natural Ant Killers
Borax, sugar water
Essential oils
Diatomaceous earth (DE), black pepper
There are many natural remedies for ants. We’ll look at four of the most popular ones: borax, sugar water, essential oils and diatomaceous earth (DE) mixed with black pepper. All of these methods have advantages and disadvantages that you should consider before deciding which one might be best for your situation.1. BORAX AND SUGAR WATERThis is an old-fashioned remedy that works quite well if you follow the directions carefully. To prepare it you need one part borax and four parts sugar dissolved in enough water to make a paste.(The exact proportions aren’t important as long as they add up to equal one cup.) Mix them together until they’re completely combined. It’s best to do this in a container so that there’s no risk of spilling on yourself or getting powdery residue all over the counter when you mix it—and be sure to wear gloves!Next take some plastic wrap or foil and press down overtop so it covers evenly but doesn’t bunch up around edges.<span style=”font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; font-family: ‘Times New Roman’, serif
1. Use Essential Oils
Essential oils can be used to repel and kill ants. Consider applying peppermint, spearmint, tea tree, cinnamon or eucalyptus essential oils where the ants are entering your home. You can also apply them to any area where you’ve seen an ant trail.
Essential oils are very effective in repelling and killing ants that have already made their way into your house. For this reason it’s important that you use caution when using them as they may stain wood surfaces if spilled or dripped on them accidentally.
2. Diatomaceous Earth
If you have an ant problem, diatomaceous earth (DE) is an effective natural remedy. DE is a non-toxic powder that kills insects by absorbing the oils and fats from their exoskeleton, causing an eventual dehydration death. You can use it as a barrier or sprinkle directly on top of ants to kill them; however, you may also want to consider using DE for other pests like fleas and bed bugs.
3. Borax and Sugar Water
- Borax and Sugar Water: Borax is an inorganic salt consisting of sodium, boron, oxygen, and water. It has been used for many years as a laundry booster and cleaning product. However, borax can be toxic if ingested in large amounts; therefore it’s best to use caution when applying it to your home or garden.
Borax mixed with sugar water is often used as an ant killer because ants are attracted to sugar. You can make this mixture by mixing 1 tablespoon of borax powder with ¼ cup of sugar into one gallon of warm water (about 120°F). Stir until the ingredients dissolve completely then pour the solution into shallow dishes that you place near ant mounds or other areas where ants frequent
4. Black Pepper and Salt
- Black Pepper and Salt
You can make a solution of black pepper and salt to repel ants from the perimeter of your house. Just add one teaspoon of each to a spray bottle, fill with water, and shake well before spraying around the outside of your home. The mixture will be effective for about 10 days before needing to be reapplied. When ants smell this solution, they’ll think that they’re in an area occupied by a predator (a good thing) and will stay away!
5. Lemon Juice and Water
- Lemon Juice and Water
Lemon juice is acidic and will kill ants, which makes it a great natural remedy for ant infestations. On top of that, lemon juice also repels ants because it’s so sour! The acidity in the lemon juice can dull the pheromones that ants use to communicate with each other, making them more inclined to leave your home alone rather than invade it. Lemon juice is safe for children and pets as well as humans, so you don’t have to worry about anyone getting sick from ingesting lemonade made with water mixed with this natural food grade product (which you could also use on any surfaces).
Natural remedies can be used to kill ants in your home, but prevention is always best.
Most natural remedies can be used for prevention as well as for killing, but prevention is always best.
Prevention is a better long-term strategy.
For example, you can try spraying any entry points to your home with water or laying down some sugar and baking soda in the area where you think ants are entering from. You could also try using boric acid or diatomaceous earth around windows and doors to kill any that may be trying to enter. These all work very well at keeping ants out of your house!
