The dried excrement of bed bugs is often found on the surface of mattresses and other furnishings throughout homes with active infestations. Bedbug excreta consists of feces, cast skins and exoskeletons of shed nymphs or adults.

Bedbug fecal matter becomes encrusted to wherever it lands on surfaces, especially fabric. When fresh, bedbug feces appear as black or brown spots on sheets or mattresses; however these spots may turn red if they have been exposed to heat (such as through laundering).
