Diatomaceous earth is a natural way to kill ants. It can be purchased at most garden supply stores or online, and it can also kill other insects such as fleas, ticks and bedbugs. Diatomaceous earth works by dehydrating the insect’s exoskeleton so that it crumbles away from its body.

Diatomaceous earth should be applied directly onto the ant colony in question with a bulb duster or similar device. The powder must stay dry when applied to be effective; wetting will not damage the effectiveness but could make cleanup more difficult than necessary.
