So you may be asking yourself, “How do ants breath?” Well, that’s a great question! Despite being equipped with an exoskeleton and tiny body; ants are actually quite capable of breathing underwater. The answer to the question, “How do ants breath?” is quite simple: they develop skills. Everybody loves ants but very few people know the answer to how do ants breath. It is amazing to me that there are so many animals on this earth and yet people know very little about them. I’m not counting myself since I am writing an article about it but other than that, I would estimate that only 10% of people would know how ants breathe. How do ants breath? This question is often asked by children when they first start learning about the different living organisms in the world. There are many theories about how an ant breathes, but most experts tend to agree that ants breathe throught their abdomen. There’s probably not much that can floor you when it comes to insect biology. Besides bees and ants, insects are pretty much like completely alien organisms which we could study for a lifetime and still not understand. But the thing is, whenever I tell people what I study (ant ecology — those little critters that march up hill) I’ve noticed two things. First, there’s that moment where I can practically see the mental gears in their head just stopping to a halt…But then it also puts a spark in their eye, and they ask me something along the lines of: That’s pretty cool.

You might think that it’s the same way you do, but you’d be wrong! Ants don’t have lungs, so they can’t breathe through their mouths and noses like humans. Instead, ants breathe through specialized pores on their abdomen called spiracles.

These tiny openings allow oxygen to enter their bodies and carbon dioxide to escape, so that the ants can manage their metabolic processes. You might think that this would make it difficult for ants to move around quickly and climb tall structures, but actually, it’s very efficient: because there is no mixing of gases inside an ant’s body when it exhales carbon dioxide and inhales oxygen, the process is much more efficient than it would be if there was some kind of mixing chamber involved.

The other thing you need to know about how ants breathe is that not all species are able to do so – in fact most ants cannot! Only certain types of ants have this ability (for example fire ants or carpenter ants). This means if you are trying to keep a colony of ants alive in captivity then they will need some sort of supplemental air source such as a small fan or air pump running constantly near them. Ants breathe using their antennae, which are covered with tiny hairs. These hairs are so small that they act like capillaries, allowing oxygen to pass directly from the air into the insect’s tissues.

Ants also have a network of tubes through which they breathe. The tubes branch off from the insect’s heart and extend out through its entire body.

The reason ants can get away with such an unusual method of breathing is that their bodies are small enough for this system to work efficiently.
