With the recent rise of bed bugs becoming more common place, more and more homeowners are starting to use dry ice as a non-toxic and low cost way to exterminate these pesky pests. Bed Bugs breed in small crevices and can be found in soft furniture for example; this makes their extermination that much harder. Dry Ice is a good alternative to other chemical methods because it gives the bugs a relatively slow, painful death without leaving a mess. Bed bugs are a growing pest infestation in the US. They feed on humans, which causes irritation and allergic reactions for many people. The best way to treat bed bugs is with dry ice. We offer low cost bed bug treatment that is environmentally friendly and safe for the environment. Bed bugs are a common problem. However, they do not have to be something that you can’t get rid of. These little pests like to live in bedding, furniture and clothing and can be very difficult to kill. They tend to hide in tiny crevices and cracks located in the bed, mattress and floorboards which make it hard to reach them with sprays or creams.
Bed Bug Dry Ice Trap
Take a medium sized box
The box should be large enough to hold the dry ice blocks. A medium sized box is ideal. It is also important that it be air tight, as the carbon dioxide will need room to expand and contract without leaking out of the box.
Use caution when selecting your container, because most cardboard boxes are not rated for use with dry ice and therefore will not withstand its extreme cold temperature (-109 degrees Fahrenheit). If you choose to use a plastic or metal container instead, make sure there is adequate ventilation for the carbon dioxide gas produced by melting dry ice.
Place a piece of paper towel on the bottom.
Place a piece of paper towel on the bottom. This helps trap the bugs and prevent them from escaping into your dry ice trap, as well as keeping your box clean.
Place 1-2 dry ice blocks into the box
- Place 1-2 dry ice blocks into the box, making sure not to touch the dry ice with your bare hands. The vapour can cause frostbite, so be careful!
- Close up the box and secure it tightly with duct tape or a few bungee cords. Ensure that no gaps are present between the box’s lid and its base – this will help keep more heat from escaping from inside of the trap, which could potentially harm your bed bug population. If you’re planning on using bungee cords instead of tape for sealing purposes, make sure that there aren’t any sharp edges along their lengths; if there are such edges then they should be filed down before use (or else you might end up cutting yourself).
- Place your completed trap somewhere away from where people are sleeping – ideally in an area where there aren’t many other people living either (i e but not limited too basements). Make sure that nothing flammable is near by as well since dry ice can cause fires when it comes into contact with certain materials (such as wood) over time due to its low temperature melting rate; do not place traps near sources without proper ventilation either because carbon dioxide poisoning may occur if this happens too close together (you will see symptoms such as dizziness or drowsiness upon inhaling too much CO2).
Seal the box with duct tape
You will need to seal the box with duct tape. Duct tape is sticky, so be careful about where you place it. Duct tape is strong and waterproof, making it a good option for sealing the box.
Monitor the box for bugs.
Once you’ve set up the trap, you should check it every day. After 24 hours, the dry ice will have completely evaporated and the bed bugs will be trapped in their own little world of death. If there are any bugs inside, they’ll be frozen and dead by this point.
If there are no bed bugs in your trap after a week of monitoring and checking, congratulations! You’ve successfully killed them all without getting pesticide on your hands or releasing it into your home’s air supply (which could be an issue if you have asthma). Don’t worry too much about any stragglers that might try to sneak out; they’ll probably die outside anyway because they’re cold-blooded animals who don’t know how to regulate their body temperatures (and also because it’s winter).
Taking care of your bed bug problem can be relatively pain free
You can take great care of your bed bug problem before it becomes a massive infestation that costs you time and money. Bed bugs can be killed with cold, so placing them in a dry ice trap is one way to deal with them.
The good news is that dry ice is safe to handle, as long as you take proper precautions. The bad news is that the process of freezing bed bugs is not perfect: they may escape or survive, depending on how much time they spend in the environment where they’re being frozen and how much material they’re surrounded by (such as clothes). Still, this method has been proven effective for killing these insects when combined with other control methods like vacuuming up what remains after the freeze has occurred.
