How do ants poop? When I think of how do ants poop, it reminds me of grade school science class. You know, when you’d learn about different animal behaviors and how they behave? You might not have thought about ants as much as anyone else, but I’m sure you remember learning that bees pollinate plants. Or maybe you learned about a bird’s song and other birds would sing along with it. Oh yes, didn’t we all love watching the birds sing-off when we were in grade school? Ahhh…these memories. How do ants poop? This is a question I often ask myself when I’m bored, or out of things to do. It’s pretty interesting, right? To the average person the answer may not be apparent. I mean, you’ve seen ant droppings. You may have even stepped on one and realized it was more than just sawdust. What did you learn about that little glob of marble-sized feces? We all know birds [don’t] shit in groups, etc., but what about ants?

Ants are fascinating creatures. They’re hard workers, and they’re social. But what is it like to be an ant? What do they do when they aren’t working? How do they go to the bathroom?

We’ll let you in on a little secret: ants poop just like we do! Ants have digestive systems just like humans, so they produce waste and can excrete it out of their bodies. However, ants have a special way of doing things that makes them unique—and more efficient—than us humans.

In fact, ants don’t even need to stop what they’re doing in order to defecate. Instead, they use a process called “dumping.” This is when ants will poop directly onto their backs, then rub their abdomens on the ground until all of the waste has been absorbed into the soil or carried away by other ants who are walking by at that moment (see image below).

Ants also use this method for disposing of dead bodies from their colony as well as food waste from their meals. It’s very efficient! Ants poop like they breathe: they just do it everywhere.

Ants are known for their industriousness, but the truth is that they’re also a little gross. They poop everywhere—and we mean everywhere. Ants don’t really care about privacy (or sanitation), so your kitchen counter is fair game as a toilet.

Ants are only capable of going to the bathroom once every few days, so when they finally get around to it, they produce a lot of waste—up to 50 times more than most other animals their size. This makes them ideal for helping you clean up your home or office!
