You’ve probably asked the question “how do ants see” or wondered what a spy ant sees from a microscopic point of view. Or maybe you just wanted to know how a carpenter ant’s eyes work and why they have so many lenses. I was in the same boat as you, but then I did some research into ant eyes and would like to share my findings with you. Heard of the movie “A Bug’s Life?” Well, if you have, you know that ants are just like us humans in some ways. One similarity is they can see using their eyes and they really can’t use their imaginations. But, that’s not all there is to ants and how they view the world around them. Ever wonder how ants can see? Ever look into an ant’s eyes and wonder what is going on in the mind of the ant? 1 pound of ants can lift 28 pounds. So which is heavier, one pound of ants or 1 pound of rocks. A single ant colony may contain as many as 500,000 individual ants. Ants are considered to be all female. The Queen and the workers are female but soldiers, drones and the male Young are all sterile. Every ant has its own scent or pheromone so each ant knows where it comes from. Why do ants have these special senses? They need their senses to work together for their survival.
How Do Ants See
Ants are very unique creatures. They have a very different way of seeing the world than we do, and they rely on their sense of smell as well as their sight to get around.
Ants have two large compound eyes that are made up of thousands of tiny lenses. These compound eyes allow the ant to see both color and movement. Ants also have three small simple eyes on the top of their head that can only detect light and dark. These simple eyes are used to help with navigation in low-light conditions.
Ants also have three sets of antennae located on each side of their head. The antennae contain many sensitive hairs that help ants detect odors and vibrations from other ants moving through the colony or from prey items hiding in cracks in the ground or under leaves. Ants use these antennae to communicate with each other as well as find food sources like nectar or seeds. How Do Ants See?
The answer to this question is complicated, but once you understand the basics, you’ll wonder how you ever thought of ants as having a single sense of vision.
Ants have compound eyes just like humans do, but unlike humans, ants cannot focus their vision on objects that are very close or far away from them. Instead of having one central point where all the light rays from an object are focused, ants have many small points—or facets—where each ray is focused. This gives them a wider field of view than humans and helps them detect movement more effectively.
But ants don’t see in black and white like most people think; they actually see in color! They can also detect polarized light (light waves with one plane of vibration) through their compound eyes.
