Things got so bad that there were even bed bug conferences and seminars! But it turns out, when you ask your neighbor how many bed bugs they have, the answer is always the same–one!

I only found one bed bug.

That’s what I said to my landlord as he inspected my apartment. I was trying to be funny, but he didn’t get it. He just looked at me with this blank stare and said “what do you mean?”

I said “well, I only found one bed bug.” He looked around the room, did a cursory inspection of the sheets on my bed, and then said “this is unacceptable.”

“You have to do something about this,” he said, “or you’ll be evicted.”

“But there’s only one bed bug,” I said again. The landlord looked at me like he thought I was insane before walking out of my apartment without another word.
