If you have roaches in your home, chances are they slip through a crack or come out at night when you’re asleep. But how do cockroaches see? I don’t know about you but I love animals. I mean, what’s not to like about animals? They’re cute, furry, cuddly and….well…animal-ish. But there are also lots of things we don’t know about some animals. Like how cockroaches see for instance. Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in homes, and they can do a lot of damage if left unchecked. They can also be hard to get rid of because of their ability to survive for long periods of time without food or water. One question that many people have about cockroaches is how they see. While it may seem surprising, these insects don’t see much better than humans do! They do have a few special adaptations that allow them to navigate around their environments easily.
Cockroaches have two light-sensitive cells on each side of their eyes called ommatidia. These cells work together to create an image similar to what we would see with our own eyes. The eyes are located on top of the head in a pair of stalk-like appendages called antennae, which are used for balance and communication between roaches.
The ommatidia in cockroach eyes are arranged in a hexagonal pattern that helps them focus light onto photoreceptors at the back of each eye (called rhabdomeres). This allows them to detect motion more easily than humans can since they don’t need depth perception like we do!
