In 1915, Parris Island was constructed as a temporary camp to house and train United States Marine Corps recruits. The facility was named after the original landowner, General Thomas Parris of Sumter, South Carolina. Parris Island became the site for recruit training for all enlisted Marines after relocation from Norfolk, Virginia in 1922. Today it is the home to approximately 11,000 recruits during training every year. Parris Island Sand Fleas are a type of biting sand flea common to Parris Island, South Carolina. These strange creatures have the ability to burrow into humans’ skin and lay eggs. The bites of Parris Island Sand Fleas can be very itchy but they aren’t known to transmit disease.
