If you’ve ever wondered how do you tell the difference between a wasp and a hornet, then this post is for you! I get asked that question a lot. And it’s one that, in truth, I don’t know the answer to. There are so many different species of wasps/hornets that I really can’t say, with 100% certainty, whether all wasps have this characteristic or if only some do. How do you tell the difference between a wasp and a hornet? How can you differentiate one from another? Is it as simple as just learning about their appearance, or is there an extra step, something even more important to look for? Well, that’s what we’re here to talk about. As we know from past articles I’ve written (like this one), there are a lot of pests out there that want to ruin our crops and cause problems for us in general. These insects, animals and other pests run the gamut of the alphabet and the animal kingdom. There are many different things we need to watch out for when working on the farm; after all, I only have so many lines of defense between me and an attacking animal or pest. There are a lot of wasp vs. hornet questions out there, and I bet you’re here because you aren’t sure how to tell them apart. Many insects look similar to others, but that doesn’t mean you can mix them up. Otherwise, you’d be calling every single yellow-and-black stinging insect a wasp or even worse, a honeybee!
How Do You Tell The Difference Between A Wasp And A Hornet
A wasp is a social insect that lives in colonies and builds nests, while hornets live alone and build nests out of paper. They also differ in size: wasps are typically less than an inch in length, while hornets can be up to 2 inches long.
Wasp stings are unique because they have barbs at the end of them, which lock into skin and break off inside the body, causing a painful sting. When a wasp stings you, it releases venom from its abdomen, which has enzymes that make it hard for your body to digest. In most cases, this means that the sting will stay attached to you for some time until its venom runs out.
Hornet stings do not have barbs on their stinger, so they can easily pull away from your body afterward. Hornets also release less venom than wasps do—about 1/5th as much—which means that the pain will subside faster than it would with a wasp sting. A wasp and a hornet are both types of stinging insects, but they have some notable differences.
The most obvious difference is that a wasp has a stinger, while a hornet does not. Hornets do have “stings” but they’re actually more like little pincers that they use to grab and hold prey while they sting it.
Wasp and hornets both belong to the same order of insects (Hymenoptera), so they share many other similarities. They’re both social insects that live in colonies, for example—although wasps tend to be more social than hornets. They also both eat meat and can survive on their own if necessary, unlike bees which are completely dependent on the colony’s queen for survival.
One way you can tell if it’s a wasp or a hornet is by looking at the antennae—wasp antennae are straight while hornet antennae are curved at the tip.
