The most common sand fleas in the Lower 48 states are Tyrrellia, Phylloplecta (loopers), and Tylodina, but there are many other genera and species, too. There is a lot of valuable information available on the Internet about the ecology and biology of sand fleas.  In this article I will briefly provide some information on how to find sand fleas and what can be observed in natural samples of live sand fleas.

To find sand fleas, you’ll need:

a flashlight or other source of light

a magnifying glass or pair of binoculars (optional)

a container to collect the fleas in (optional)

Sand fleas are small, black or brown insects that can be found in most coastal areas. They are typically one-quarter to one-half of an inch long and have a flat body. They are also known as “no-seeums,” which is a term used to describe their small size and ability to bite through clothing.

Sand fleas are usually active at night and prefer warm, humid climates. They can be found in areas with tall grasses that allow them to remain hidden from predators during the day. They can also be found in sand dunes and other sandy areas where they live under rocks or debris during the day.
