DEET

DEET is the most widely used insect repellent. It has been registered for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since 1957 and is considered to be safe when used as directed on EPA-approved product labels. However, some people experience side effects from DEET after using it on their skin or clothing. Possible symptoms include an allergic reaction, dizziness and nausea as well as burning sensations or rashes at the application site after applying DEET containing products directly to skin; these symptoms may occur in sensitive people regardless of whether they are using DEET products according to label instructions or not.

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

• Apply lemon eucalyptus oil to your skin or clothing.
• You can also use a few drops in water to make a spray, which will last even longer than applying it directly to the skin.
• It’s most effective when applied to the bottoms of shoes before putting them on, but you can also apply it directly to exposed skin or put some on your clothes as needed throughout the day.

IR3535

IR3535 is a chemical compound with a somewhat similar structure to the amino acid alanine. It can be found in sunscreen, insect repellents, and skin lotions. IR3535 is safe for pregnant women and children.

Permethrin

Permethrin is an insecticide used to treat clothing and gear for ticks, mosquitoes and other insects. It is not for use on the skin. Permethrin is a neurotoxin that affects the nervous system of insects, including ticks.

Picaridin

Picaridin is a natural repellent derived from piperine, a substance found in pepper. It was developed in the 1980s by Bayer, and has since been used as an insect repellent in many products. Picaridin has been shown to be effective at repelling ticks on humans.

Picaridin is considered safe for use on humans. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Center for Disease Control (CDC) does not have any warnings about using picaridin products on your skin or clothing, but it does state that you should avoid getting picaridin into your eyes or mouth because of its possible toxicity levels when ingested.[1]
