What is a ‘Fabric Spray’?
A fabric spray is a product that you apply to bedding and other fabrics in your home to kill bed bugs. Bed bugs are tiny creatures with a flat, oval shape that can be as small as 1/4 of an inch long. If left unchecked, they can lead to itchy bites, sleepless nights and stress on those who live in infested homes.
Bed bug sprays are typically made of pesticides or essential oils that repel bed bugs by masking their scent so they cannot find hosts (people) to feed on.
How do you make a bed bug fabric spray?
If you’d like to make your own bed bug fabric spray, follow these steps.
- Add 2-3 teaspoons of vinegar and 10-15 drops of essential oils (lavender, peppermint, clove) to a spray bottle.
- Fill the rest of the container with water.
How to use the bed bug spray
- Before you begin, put on your mask and goggles.
- Spray the product in a sweeping motion across the surface of the fabric. Don’t forget to spray the underside of the fabric as well. Let it air dry before use. Repeat this process every few weeks to keep bed bugs away from your home or office space.

You can make a spray at home. The two main chemicals you’ll want to use are pyrethrin (the natural insecticide) and alcohol (the solvent to dissolve the pyrethrin). The ratio of these two chemicals will vary depending on which recipe you use, but it should be around 10 parts pyrethrin to one part alcohol by volume.
After spraying your furniture with this homemade mixture, immediately vacuuming up any visible residue is recommended. You should also clean up any spills that occur while making the solution or spraying it in your home. When done properly, this method can kill bed bugs within hours of contacting them with the spray.[2]
