Large Carpenter Ants

These large carpenter ants have a lot of strong points — massive size, strength, and mandibles to name a few. They make great pets!!!

They are a little over an inch long, usually black or gray (rarely yellow or red) and are velvety in texture.  They have a large bulbous head, distinct from the thorax and abdomen. They have two very large upper eyes and their antennae, which protrude from the front of their head, are longer than their body.

One day, I was out doing yard work and ran into a pest that could have given me an ant infestation: carpenter ants. Carpenter ants by definition are large black ants that burrow in wood and timber. Sounds scary right? That was my thought too. After the initial shock of seeing them, I called Pest Pro. They were able to help me out and make sure I was safe from these insects moving forward. Since then, I’ve learned a lot about carpenter ants, what they look like and how to avoid them.

When I was about 8 years old, my mother noticed a large black ant that was crawling on her bathroom floor. She tried to kill it but the ant just kept coming back by crawling in from her kitchen. One day she saw a very large white ant on the floor and decided that it must have been after something to eat. She then began noticing more large white ants coming in from outside through a small crack in her front door. My mother knew they were after food because they were always around her kitchen eating table scraps.
