Carpenter ants are the largest of the ants in North America. These flying ants and their winged, fertile offspring, known as reproductives, can infest structures; most prefer damp areas such as eaves and soffits. Females are winged while males are wingless. A carpenter ant colony has three caste groups: workers (commonly called ‘salt and pepper’ ants), soldiers and reproductive forms. Carpenter ants are a small variety of ant that is best known for burrowing into wood. As the name would suggest, carpenter ants commonly tunnel into wooden structures and trees, forming nests that can be extremely serious issues to homes. The reason the carpenter ant is named such, however, isn’t because they prefer wood to any other material. Instead, this term was applied to them due to their habit of constructing their nests inside of woodwork and homes, as well as their fondness for “carpenters,” a term which used to describe people in the construction industry who worked with wood.

Carpenter ants are one of those insects that can be really hard to identify. Their bodies are long, slender and brownish-black in color, and they have a pair of very long, straight antennae. They also have three distinct body parts: the head, thorax (which is where their legs are attached) and abdomen.

Carpenter ants are often confused with termites because they have similar body shapes. However, unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t eat wood. Instead, they eat dry plant materials like cellulose and other waste products from other insects such as dead insects or feces from other animals like rabbits or raccoons.

Carpenter ants are dark red-brown to blackish in color and vary from 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch long with an oval abdomen that is shiny and yellowish-brown in color.

Carpenter ants prefer moist wood as their food source; however, they will eat almost any organic material including seeds, tree bark, dead insects and even animal feces if necessary. They chew through wood using their mandibles (jaws) to make galleries (tunnels) inside wooden structures where they nest and raise young colonies year after year unless they’re controlled by pesticides or baits placed by professionals who know what they’re doing or homeowners themselves who learn how to identify them correctly.”
