Fleas have been with us, in fact they have lived with all warm blooded creatures, including our pets and us humans, since they were created by God. Although they have been around forever they still bring many problems to the life of everyone who owns a pet. The purpose of this blog post is to provide some information on the life cycle of fleas and to give an estimation of how long it takes flea eggs to hatch into adult fleas.
Before we dive into the article, I’d like to post a quick disclaimer. There aren’t too many dangerous flea-borne diseases in the United States, so you don’t have to worry too much. However, it still isn’t fun being bitten by a flea and it’s even worse if you have children or pets in the house. So, let’s focus on preventative measures to keep the pests from entering your house
Fleas are small insects that have four legs. They get their name from their jumping ability: flea means jumping. Fleas live on the hair of animals and birds, but they can also bite humans and cause serious problems. This article discusses how fleas grow and develop and their life cycle.
Fleas are a common nuisance in households and pets throughout the U.S. Their bites are painful and cause numerous skin problems for pet owners. Understanding their life cycle is an essential step to getting rid of fleas and avoiding future infestations.
Fleas are blood-feeding insects (two-winged insects) belonging to the Order: Siphonaptera, and live in mammals, but also in ocean water (where they sometimes are eaten by whales).

The life cycle of fleas is a very unique and interesting process. The fleas will begin in their eggs, which are laid by adult female fleas. The eggs will then hatch into larvae, which will feed on organic matter for about 3-4 days until they pupate into adults.
The adult fleas will feed on blood before laying eggs. They are very small in size and can be seen moving around from their host’s skin to their hair, fur or feathers.
Flea repellents are available that can be sprayed onto your pet’s coat or applied directly to their skin. Some of these products may also kill adult fleas on contact.
It is recommended that you vacuum carpets and upholstery regularly to remove any eggs or larvae that may be present there as well as vacuuming floors daily if possible so as not to spread any existing fleas around the house.
The Life Cycle of Fleas
Fleas are parasites that feed on the blood of animals, including humans. They are extremely small, with an adult flea measuring about 1/16th of an inch long. This makes it easy for them to hide in crevices and cracks where they live close to their hosts. When they bite you, they inject you with their saliva which contains anticoagulants that prevent your blood from clotting when it’s sucked out by the flea.
The life cycle of a flea begins when a female lays her eggs in or near the place where she lives. The eggs hatch into larvae, which feed on organic matter like dead insects and feces until they become adults. Once they turn into adults, they begin laying more eggs so that their species continues to survive.
The life cycle takes between 5-12 days depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity but can take as long as 16 days if conditions aren’t favorable enough for development (cold temperatures).
The life cycle of fleas begins with the egg. Female fleas lay their eggs on the host, which can be a dog, cat, or other animal. The eggs fall off and land on the ground. They hatch into larvae, which is what you see when you see the white stuff on your pet’s fur. These larvae feed on organic matter like dead skin cells and other debris in the environment. The larvae then pupate and become adults that look like tiny black dots on your pet’s fur—these are the fleas you can see crawling around!
