Red ants are the only ants in Australia that are social and live in large communities, such as nests. In many parts of Australia, they thrive year round where due to their dry climate it is too hard for normal ant colonies to form. These Australian ants have been on Earth for approximately 40 million years. Scolothrus bonariensis, or the red imported fire ant (RIFA), is a species of ant native to South America. A member of the genus Scolothrus, the species was described in 1824 by entomologist Jerônimo Gilio from specimens collected in Argentina. The species is named after entomologist and physician Francisco Fages, who first described the species to which it is most closely related, S. richteri. Red ants make their colonies in the ground or other surfaces such as logs, firewood, tree stumps, wood or rock piles. They take over an area by driving out others ants. If you have red ants on your property there’s a good chance that once you treat the main nest and eliminate these worker ants, the colony will not return. A great way to prevent any further forays of these pesky red ants is to place barriers around your property that will keep them out of areas like flower beds, vegetable gardens, and other high traffic areas.

Red ants are known for the fact that they live in large colonies and can be found in almost every continent on earth. They also work together with other species of ants so they can survive better.
