Home Remedies For Sugar Ants

Borax Powder

A quick search of the internet will reveal that borax powder is a natural ant killer. This method works best if you have sugar ants, but it can also be used to eliminate other species of ants. To use this remedy:

• Mix equal parts borax and sugar or honey together in a small bowl.
• Apply liberally to areas where you see ants congregating (around food sources).
• The ants will take it back to their colony and feed it to the queen, killing her and her children in the process.[1]

Caulk, Foam and Plumbing Holes

• Caulk or foam all cracks in the walls, floors, and ceilings.
• Seal holes around plumbing pipes with caulk or foam.
• Seal gaps around gas pipes, electrical wires, and cable TV and phone lines with caulk or foam.
• Seal gaps around windows and doors with caulk or foam.

Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds are a natural insecticide and can be used to repel ants. Coffee grounds can kill ants, stop them coming back, and act as an effective repellent for ants.

Place coffee grounds in areas where you have seen the most activity from sugar ants to help deter them from coming back.

Chalk

If you have sugar ants, one of the best home remedies is to draw a line around your home—anywhere from 6 inches to 2 feet will work. This line should be thick enough that it’s easy for you to see but not so thick that it’s difficult for the ants to cross (you may need multiple colors). Once this barrier is in place, the ants will not cross over it and will stay out of your house.

Cinnamon Powder

Cinnamon powder is another great home remedy for sugar ants. It has a strong smell that sugar ants don’t like, so if you sprinkle it wherever the ants are and let it sit for a few days, they’ll be gone in no time. You can also mix equal parts cinnamon powder with sugar and water to create an effective paste that’s perfect for traps or cups.

Laundry Soap and Water

• Mix 1 part soap to 3 parts water.
• Spray on ants.

Lemon Juice, Vinegar and Baking Soda

To make this solution, mix 4 tablespoons of vinegar and 3 tablespoons of lemon juice in a bowl. Then add 2 teaspoons of baking soda to the mixture and stir well.

Mix equal parts of this solution with water (1:1) in a spray bottle and lightly spray the area where you would like to repel ants. You can also soak cotton balls in this solution and leave them on windowsills or doorways.

This natural remedy will kill ants that come into contact with it immediately, but it will not kill the ant colony itself. If you want to use this as a long-term solution for killing sugar ants, combine equal parts of borax or diatomaceous earth with water until you have a thick paste and spread it over areas where sugar ants may be entering your home. This should be reapplied every few days until there are no more signs of activity from sugar ants inside your house
