Marabunta Ants

When Marabunta is hungry, they don’t mess around. So, if you see a colony of these crazy ants it’s best to high tail it out of there. Armed with their formidable mandibles and alarm chemicals, these ants are the strongest in their world of insects. These red ants are capable of biting even through a leather glove!

Marabunta ants is a large group of ants in the subfamily Dolichoderinae. These ants have powerful jaws, which allow them to chew through wood or carton to create nesting tunnels. They are good for controlling pest species and are used as biological control agents. Learn more about Marabunta ants here.

So how could a group of ants manage to form such large colonies? Ants communicate with each other by means of pheromones. The pheromone is applied by “ant workers” in order to mark and direct the rest of the colony towards food, water, a new nesting place, an enemy attack and many other situations. Thus, even if a small group of ants finds a source of food they will not share it. Rather they will return to the colony and disperse a message that might lead the whole colony to gather food – there ant city. In case they find running water: they will gather their colony there; this way they can drink without danger and also catch their prey around the water’s edge.

Ants, along with the bees and the spiders, make up the largest order of the hexapods, with almost 12,000 described species. They are possibly the most successful group of insects on planet Earth ever, and certainly one of the most numerous. Ants appear in many types of environments: arctic tundra (where they are sometimes called snow ants), semi-arid deserts (where they may be called biting or red ants because of their sting or colour), tropical rainforests (where there may be several hundred different species occupying a small area such as a rotten log), and even in aquatic environments, for example the water-dwelling Crematogaster species which swim and dive.

Ants have an interesting way of finding food. It is usually done by following the pheromone trail left by other ants. Pheromones are chemical-based scents that are unique to each individual ant. They are used to identify members of the colony. The colony is made up of the queen and workers. Since it is important for other ants to smell the pheromones, they rely on two glands in their abdomen called the Malpighian tubules. These are responsible in secreting a pheromone substance through each ant’s body. After an ant finds food, it leaves a scent trail behind it which attracts other ants to the food source with more efficiency than the random searching technique
