For those of you unfamiliar with them, Mississippi Cockroaches or Blattodes Sacturnus as they are officially called, are considered by many scientists to be the most feared and hated insects in North America. In addition to being a constant threat to homes and businesses, these giant roaches can grow up to 8 inches long.

We’re living in a world where there are more and more bugs. You probably wouldn’t want cockroaches in your house, and I think it’s quite creepy that some people like roaches (when they are not inside your house).

I used to think that the weather in Mississippi was too hot, humid and terrible for cockroaches. As a matter of fact, I still do. However, after moving to Mississippi, and realizing what a beautiful place it is (even with the heat and humidity), I have had to reassess these opinions on my new home state. The bugs here are nothing like those found in the north where I was born and raised. This includes cockroaches! In fact, the cockroaches here are more of a nuisance than they would be elsewhere.

You may be asking yourself, “why are you writing about cockroaches for your blog post?” It’s a valid question. I don’t like them, most of my friends don’t like them and we all have stories of when one ran across our foot or we got one falling out of our ear. Some people are even afraid of cockroaches, which is understandable (and encouraged!).

I never thought I would see cockroaches in Mississippi. But here we are, barely a few months away from summer and the sun has already been scorching the earth for what feels like an eternity. As I stare silently out of my window, eye-level with the grass, I am reminded that it is best to take steps ahead of time to prepare for that which you cannot run from.

Cockroaches are generally a very feared pest as most people do not like the idea of having them in their home. However, these creatures are not just to be found in movies about dirty old apartments or houses. People who have nice homes can have cockroaches. Cockroaches live in warm climates where there are plenty of things to eat such as food crumbs and dead bugs. In the US they are most often found in the South and traditionally they were limited to areas along the Gulf Coast states but this is no longer true.
