Bed Bug Heat Treatment Preparation

How to Prepare for a Bed Bug Heat Treatment

Bed Bug Heat Treatments are a safe and effective method for eliminating bed bugs. However, the preparation necessary to ensure that you get the best treatment results is essential to its success.

Prepare for your bed bug heat treatment by:

  • Thoroughly cleaning your home before treatment begins (even if you aren’t currently seeing any signs of bed bugs). Remove all clutter from rooms where furniture will be treated; this includes stuffed animals and anything else that can’t withstand high temperatures without being damaged or destroyed.
  • Pack clothes away in plastic bags to prevent them from becoming saturated with any residual moisture left over after the heating process has ended. If you have enough time before moving out of your home during the day while it’s being treated by an exterminator, pack up everything except what’s needed for everyday living (food, toiletries, etc.).

What is a Bed Bug Heat Treatment?

A bed bug heat treatment is the most effective and eco-friendly method available. It can be used to eliminate all life stages of bed bugs and eggs, including those hiding in cracks and crevices. The heat generated by the process is also capable of reaching temperatures that kill bed bug eggs that have been laid within walls or baseboards. Bed bug heat treatments do not use harsh chemicals, pesticides or residuals left behind when using other treatment methods.

Heat can reach temperatures over 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) which will kill any living organisms in its path including:

  • Bed bugs (all life stages)
  • Eggs (including those that have already been laid)

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs during the 48 Hours Prior to your Bed Bug Heat Treatment

\*Vacuuming: Bed bugs are very good at hiding. They don’t want to be seen, so they’ll hide in cracks and crevices that you may not even think about looking in. Vacuuming is an easy way to ensure that your home is clear of bed bugs, especially along baseboards, behind furniture and anywhere else where the little critters might be hiding.

\*Laundry: This should go without saying because we all have laundry to do anyway—but it’s important that you wash everything before heat treatment. This includes any sheets or other bedding items (mattresses too!). It’s also a good idea to wash pillows, stuffed animals, coats and anything else that might get washed regularly anyways—just make sure it gets washed separately from other clothes or fabrics just in case there are any bed bug eggs present on those items!

\*Garbage bags/plastic containers with lids: If you’ve been living with infestations for longer than two months (and especially if this is the first time you’ve tried getting rid of them), chances are good that there may be some clutter accumulated around your house since the beginning stages when they were just starting out their population growth phase; this clutter could contain eggs which means that even though we’re going through all these steps right now towards getting rid of them completely…some will still remain after our heat treatment! That being said…you should take advantage of having some extra time beforehand by removing as much clutter as possible from around each room during these final days leading up until we begin our heat treatment process.”The last thing anyone needs at 3am on Monday morning after spending all day Saturday cleaning up after themselves so they can start fresh again tomorrow morning…”

Disconnect electronics and appliances from their power sources.

Disconnect all electronics and appliances from their power sources. This includes:

  • television sets
  • computers
  • lamps and light fixtures (including bulbs)

Make sure to unplug these items and remove them from the room that you’ll be treating with heat.

Unplug all electronics during treatment.

Unplugging all electronics during treatment is essential to protecting your devices from overheating. When the bed bug heat treatment is complete, wait one hour before plugging in any electronics. This allows the device’s internal temperature to return to normal levels and reduces the risk of damage to your equipment.

Unplugged devices should be placed in a cool spot away from direct sunlight or other heat sources such as radiators or heating vents until they have been given time to cool off completely.

Gather all removable objects (toys, clothing, bedding) and store them in a plastic bag so that these items can be heat-treated along with the rest of your home.

  • Gather all removable objects (toys, clothing, bedding) and store them in a plastic bag so that these items can be heat-treated along with the rest of your home.
  • If you do not have access to a commercial heat treatment unit, such as those available at stores like Home Depot or Lowes, you will need to use your oven. The entire contents of your home should be placed into the oven for 60 minutes at 120 degrees F or higher. If you are concerned about your health or if there are people who may be sensitive/allergic to bedbug bites/stings then please consult with a professional pest control expert before attempting this method on your own!
  • Once everything has been thoroughly heated and dried out (leave it closed up for at least 2 days), inspect the items again before putting them back in their place in the house.

Empty the drawers of desks, dressers, and nightstands and place their contents in plastic bags so that they can be heat-treated as well.

  • Carefully remove each drawer from its furniture. Do not remove the drawers from their furniture as they can damage the wood and/or hardware of the piece.
  • Empty the contents of each drawer into a plastic bag and place the bags in boxes or another container that is easy to move around.
  • Remove any loose clothes, toys, or other items out of closets and dressers onto a clean surface before moving them into another location. The more time you spend sorting through these items, the less time will be spent treating your home with heat and chemicals—and fewer chemicals are needed if you begin by sorting!

Preparing your home correctly is essential to a successful bed bug heat treatment

  • Get rid of clutter.

The bed bugs will be trying to find places to hide, so make sure your home is as clutter-free as possible before you begin your heat treatment. Pick up shoes, bags, hats and other items that might be hiding places for the pests. Throw away or donate any items you no longer want or need, but put them in sealed plastic bags first to reduce the risk of introducing bugs into someone else’s home if they get discarded elsewhere.

  • Disconnect electronics.

Make sure all of your electronics are disconnected from power sources (including chargers) before beginning the heat treatment process; otherwise they could overheat and become damaged by the heated air surrounding them during treatment! They’ll also be able to withstand higher temperatures than humans can handle without any kind of protection whatsoever so it’s important not only because they’ll likely survive unprotected but also because they’ll still try their best at damaging anything else nearby when given half a chance…including people like yourself who don’t know better yet still have time left on their warranties haha 🙂
