Bed bugs have become a prevalent issue in recent years and are something that everyone should be aware of. In addition, while bed bugs can be a problem in any location, they are especially problematic when you travel. For these reasons, it is important to know how to prevent bed bugs while traveling. It’s a common occurrence, you’re traveling for work and decide to do a little sightseeing. You check into your hotel for the night and get ready for bed. But when you crawl in bed, something bites you and it itches. You can’t sleep because you keep scratching at the bite. You could have been bitten by a mosquito or tick, but the real culprit is much more gross: they are bed bugs! Bed bugs are small insects found worldwide that feed on humans while they sleep. They are called bed bugs because they feed on humans while in their beds. While uncommon these days, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t prevalent when traveling. There are some basic precautionary steps you can take to keep from being bitten by these pests while traveling.
Bed Bug Prevention While Traveling
Don’t Leave Furniture and Garments in the Street
Travelers should avoid leaving their bedding, clothes, or furniture in the street. This is particularly important for those living in areas with a high density of bed bugs. If you are bringing back items from your travels, do not put them on the curb or let your neighbors borrow them.
Inspect Your Bed and Mattress Regularly
Checking your bed and mattress regularly will help you catch any signs of a bed bug infestation before it gets out of control. The first thing to do is make sure that there aren’t any signs of blood or fecal stains on the sheets, mattress, or box spring. These are usually black or brown in color and will be small. If you notice little black spots in the same shape as an exoskeleton, they may be shed skins from an adult bed bug (or other insect). You should also look at seams and tags for tiny holes where eggs could have been laid.
If you find any signs of a bed bug infestation in your hotel room, contact housekeeping immediately so that they can treat it with chemicals safely.
Use a Dryer to Kill Bed Bugs on Clothing
If you’re traveling with luggage that is infested with bed bugs, put it in the dryer for about 20 minutes at high heat to kill all stages of the bug. You can also put clothes on hangers and hang them in a well-ventilated area to allow them to air out for several days.
But what if you aren’t traveling with luggage? Or what if you have clothes that cannot be dried? The next best thing is to use the washer. Wash clothes on hot for 30 minutes or longer, taking care to wash items by themselves since some people have reported that bed bugs like being in dark places (like between sheets), so they will hide during washing time if there are other items being washed at the same time.
Bed bug eggs may not die when subjected to high temperatures (except in a vacuum cleaner), but adult bed bugs will die within 15 minutes when exposed directly however briefly (say overnight). So even though this isn’t an instant solution for killing off adult pests already hiding within your home—it does work as long as they haven’t been able into hiding places such as cracks or crevices where they might survive longer than expected since their bodies don’t react well over time without access food/water sources nearby.”
Vacuum Regularly
- Vacuum the whole house. Make sure to vacuum every inch of your home, including the floor, walls, ceiling, furniture and baseboards.
- Vacuum mattresses. Be sure to vacuum your mattress with a crevice tool attachment on the vacuum (or use a wet/dry vac) and then seal it in a thick trash bag or double-sealable plastic bag for at least 48 hours before bringing it back home. Also consider using steam cleaning services if possible; some bed bug extermination companies offer steam cleaning services as an additional option if you cannot afford professional treatment right away.
- Vacuum box springs and other furniture pieces such as couches and chairs that could be harboring bed bugs inside fabric seams or along hard-to-reach seams in wood frames where eggs can hide undetected until they hatch several months later after moving into new homes/apartments etcetera without detection by homeowners who may have been unknowingly carrying them around inside their clothing during travel periods where there was more risk for re-infestation due to limited access during confinement periods only being able to travel outside once per week etceteras . . .
Bed bugs are annoying, but you can keep them at bay with some simple preventative measures.
Bed bugs are a fairly common problem, but they can be easily prevented with some simple steps. To keep bed bugs at bay, you should:
- Wash your sheets every two weeks in hot water and dry for at least an hour on high heat to kill any eggs or adults that might be hiding out there.
- Seal off any cracks or openings where the critters could sneak in from, as well as keeping up with regular vacuuming and dusting. Bed bug larvae tend to hide in mattresses and box springs during their first few months of life before venturing out into other parts of the house—so it’s important not just to clean them yourself but also call in professionals if you have suspicions about how bad an infestation may be.
- Make sure that all your clothing is washed and dried thoroughly before being stored away again after traveling; this will get rid of any possible eggs or nymphs that may have gotten onto your clothes while traveling! It’s also worth noting here that hot temperatures (or freezing) kills bedbugs—so it makes sense that these methods would work just as well against other insects including fleas or ticks as well!
