‘Tis the season to be flea-free! Keeping your four-legged friends free from pesky flea bites can be difficult. I’m a professional dog groomer and these are some of the methods I use to keep my four-legged clients away from lice, ticks, and fleas. I hope you find these helpful for future use and you’ll be able to spend more quality time with your furry friend instead of cleaning up their little messes. You’ve done all you can to get rid of those pesky fleas on your pet. You’ve tried the shampoo and you’ve spent $20 on a flea collar (which doesn’t work at all… but it’s cheaper than the other brands). What else can you do? You can try prevention to beat these bloodsuckers once and for all! Fleas are a common problem for many households and don’t just happen to dogs and cats either. Fleas can infest your house and make a home for themselves in your carpeting, rugs, bedding, furniture, and even your body. The pesky little critters can make life miserable if they aren’t dealt with quickly. But there’s good news! You can prevent fleas with the right products and a little effort on your part. There are many ways to prevent fleas but what really works? To avoid fleas on dogs one has to start with some simple and less extensive measures, such as: regularly bathing the dog in a solution of water and shampoo, vacuuming carpets and soft furnishings weekly, and how to treat fleas on dogs and how to keep fleas off your dog.
How To Prevent Fleas
Introduction
Nothing ruins a nice walk with your pup faster than realizing they’ve picked up fleas from another dog—or from some other part of the park. Fleas are itchy, annoying parasites that can make your adorable pet miserable and drive you crazy as well. But did you know that fleas are also dangerous? It’s true: fleas can carry multiple diseases and infections, which they can then pass on to you or your family members (or other pets).
Use medication.
If you’re determined to use medication, check with your vet on the best medication for your pet. Make sure you are using the right medication for the right type of flea.
Make sure your pet is taking the medication correctly, and don’t be afraid to ask questions if you aren’t sure about anything.
Keep your pet clean and groomed.
As with humans, fleas are attracted to dirty animals and their living spaces. Once they’ve established a nest on your pet, they will begin to bite and transmit the parasites to other animals in the household. Keeping your pet clean and groomed will help prevent this from happening.
- Brushing your dog or cat regularly helps remove dead hair and skin flakes that may harbor flea eggs.
- Washing bedding (crate liner, bedding) weekly helps prevent an infestation from taking hold before it has had time to spread through your house or apartment. Wash toys regularly as well; if you’re unsure whether something should be washed or not, err on the side of caution!
- Clean food bowls daily with hot water and soap; do not use bleach as it may kill bacteria necessary for digestion but also cause irritation if ingested by either dogs or cats! If possible try not using plastic bowls at all since flea eggs love them so much haha just kidding but really don’t use plastic when possible!! Use ceramic instead 🙂 Also clean any collar/harness/leash that comes into contact with your pet’s skin often since these items are less likely than others (like beds) for being washed regularly because they’re harder work!
Talk to your vet about flea combs.
If you have a pet with fleas, talk to your vet about getting a flea comb. Flea combs are inexpensive and easy to use. By running it through the fur of your pet, you can remove most of the adult fleas from their fur. This is a great way to keep them from biting and laying eggs on your furniture or bedding!
To use a flea comb:
- Hold the comb at an angle so that you’re able to see what’s happening as you run it through your dog’s fur. You’ll want to start at his head and work towards his tail in order to get a good idea of how many live fleas he has on him at any given time (see below).
- Start by running one side of the comb into his coat slowly—you don’t want any big tangles! If there are no tangles in sight, continue moving down until he’s been brushed over completely; if there are tangles in sight then go back up slowly until they’re gone before continuing on again (see below).
Clean your home regularly.
The first step to getting rid of fleas is to clean your home. You can do this by:
- Vacuuming your carpets and upholstery regularly to remove fleas and their eggs.
- Spraying carpets, floors, upholstery, and pet bedding with an insecticide spray that kills adult fleas.
- Washing bedding weekly in hot water (at least 130°F) or more often if you see signs of an infestation. Wash pet toys and collars too! It’s important to wash all dirty laundry before putting it back into the house—even if nothing appears dirty on the surface—to prevent new infestations from starting at home again after vacuuming has taken place outside. Also consider washing your cat’s bedding every week — even if she doesn’t have any visible signs of being bitten or scratching herself because many times cats will groom themselves so much they ingest some eggs which then hatch inside them causing itching later down the road once again leading back towards having another epidemic on one’s hands.”
Throw away any grass clippings you may have accumulated.
If you are the type of person who likes to use grass clippings as a natural fertilizer, then you may be unwittingly contributing to the spread of fleas. Fleas can live in grass clippings and even hatch their eggs within them. If you choose to use this method of composting, make sure that you keep the clippings away from your pets and home.
Fleas can be a big problem, but with just a few easy steps, you can prevent them from taking over your home or your pet’s life.
Fleas can be a big problem, but with just a few easy steps, you can prevent them from taking over your home or your pet’s life.
There are many ways to keep fleas out of the house and off of pets. The most effective way is to prevent them from getting in—and that means keeping an eye on where they come from. Fleas are usually carried into the home on pets who have been outside for long periods of time. If there are other animals in the house, including wild ones that live nearby, then there’s also a chance for those flea-infested animals to bring home some unwelcome guests with them as well!
Conclusion
In conclusion, fleas are small but dangerous insects that can be really hard to get rid of once they have infested your home. However, there are many ways you can avoid this by following the tips in this article. To prevent fleas from coming into your house and infesting it, make sure you vacuum regularly so that no eggs or larvae are left lying about on the floor. Your pets should also be treated against flea infestation because any stray eggs will hatch if not properly disposed of.
