Animals and insects bite. It’s great to live in a world where we are not the only ones with nasty mouths! But that doesn’t mean it’s any less disgusting when you wake up to discover ants streaming into your bedroom or bed post-bout of late night gymnastics. Before you start dousing your place in bug spray, there are a few ways to tell if those red bites are actually from an ant or bed bugs. If you’ve been suffering from bed bug bites and you’re convinced that everything else has been ruled out… then you’re probably right. However, if the culprit is ant bites, on the other hand, then that’s another story! Are you confused about the differences between these two types of bites? Not to worry. Let me ask you some questions…Do you have ants? Do you have no idea what the awesomeness those little (normal size) insects are doing? Oh, my friend, you’re in for a treat. Ants are pretty great animals and they can be a ton of fun to watch. In this post, I will explain a few things that ants do and help identify if you have ants or bed bug bites.
Bed Bug Bites Vs Ant Bites
What are bed bug bites?
Bed bug bites are usually in a row, and look like pink welts or raised bumps. The bites tend to be small and relatively inconspicuous. They can appear as single or multiple bites in a cluster, but they’ll always be in rows of 3-4 bites each.
Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed on human blood while they sleep; they often live within the seams of mattresses, box springs, and bed frames. When you’re bitten by one of these tiny creatures (which is more likely than not), you’ll wake up with itchy red bumps on your skin—usually on your arms or torso—that will go away within a few days without any medical intervention needed.
What do bed bugs look like?
Bed bugs are small, flat and oval in shape. They measure between 5mm to 7mm in length. Adult bedbugs are brownish-red and have a flat body with long, narrow legs.
Bed bugs have a life cycle that lasts about 1 year, with each stage lasting about 3 weeks. They shed their skin as they grow from one stage to another. The shell left behind when the skin is shed is known as an exoskeleton (or exuviae). Bed bugs go through five stages before reaching adulthood: egg, nymphs and adult male or female. Eggs are tiny but look like tiny white balls with legs sticking out of them when you examine them closely under a microscope–you can see how many eggs there were by looking at how many shells there are! Nymphs resemble adults except they lack pigment until after they’ve molted several times into adulthood; then they develop red coloration as well as new abdominal markings called sterna!
As part of its life cycle, an immature bedbug will molt six times before attaining maturity, shedding its old cuticle each time in order to grow larger than its previous form (which explains why we keep seeing more evidence of their presence even though we thought we got rid of all of them!).
Where do bed bugs live?
Bed bugs are nocturnal, and so they like to curl up in dark places. This means that they can be anywhere—you could have them at work or school, in the car or even on vacation. They’re really versatile little critters!
They can also go for months without feeding, so it’s possible you may not find any evidence of bed bugs until after you wake up with bites every morning. Their favorite hangouts include mattresses, box springs (the mattress is where they prefer to live), headboards and nightstands (which provide a nice dark place for them to hide). Bed bugs feed by piercing skin with their proboscis and then sucking blood from victims while their saliva takes effect on the host’s nervous system; this causes an allergic reaction that makes us itch when we get bitten by them again later on down the road
Do I have bed bugs or ants?
Bed bug bites vs ants:
Bed bugs will bite you in groups of three. Ants, on the other hand, tend to bite in a straight line and they’re much smaller than bed bugs (about 1/16-inch long). Bed bug bites can also occur in clusters whereas ant bites are usually found in a neat line or row. Ant bites are less visible than bed bug bites and may look like red dots or small red bumps.
Bed Bug Bites Vs Ant Bites: Which do you have?
Are there good signs of bed bugs?
If you suspect that you have bed bugs, keep an eye out for the following signs:
- Look for live or dead bed bugs. Bed bugs are small and difficult to see, so check thoroughly with a flashlight to ensure they aren’t hiding in any cracks or crevices of your mattress, box spring, headboard or furniture. If there are signs of infestation (e.g., fecal spots on sheets) then it’s likely that more than one adult bed bug is present. You can also use an ultraviolet light “blacklight” to help identify live insects if you think you’ve found them but aren’t sure what they are; this will make their exoskeletons glow under the blacklight’s wavelength.[1]
2 . Look for fecal spots on sheets/towels/bedding as well as shed skins from molting – these could be signs of recent activity by crawling insects such as fleas and lice (which don’t bite).
Should I call an exterminator if I have bed bugs or ants?
If you have ants or bed bugs, an exterminator is your best bet.
There are a few reasons why calling in pest control is the way to go:
- Ant bites are usually one-off occurrences, while bed bug infestations tend to be recurring. Bed bugs can live in your home for months without being detected — and they’re harder to get rid of once they’re there. As their name implies, ant bites can be easily treated with over-the-counter medications like Benadryl (or hydrocortisone cream if you have sensitive skin).
Bed bugs can be annoying and it’s important to know if you have them.
You may be wondering how you can tell if you have bed bugs. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to spot, so don’t rely on a visual inspection. If you think you might have bed bugs, it’s best to call an exterminator for help. This is especially important because DIY methods won’t work for treating this pest properly and could lead to more infestations in the future!
If there’s no evidence of an infestation, here are some steps that will help prevent problems:
- Vacuum regularly, preferably every day or two
- Empty out the bag into a sealed plastic container after each vacuuming session (if possible)
- Use hot water heaters instead of steam cleaners whenever possible
- Removes insect venom, saliva, and other irritants left under the skin using suction
- By removing the irritant, the body stops producing the reaction that is causing you to itch & swell
- Works on: mosquitoes, bees, wasps, biting flies, no-see-ums, chiggers, sea lice & more
- Compact, lightweight, reusable and easy to carry
- Clinically Proven, kid friendly, 100% guarantee
