Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed exclusively on the blood of people and animals while they sleep.

Bed bugs are not a sign of poor hygiene. They are attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide, not dirt or filth. They can be found in many different locations including hotels, apartment complexes, dormitories, homes and public transportation systems. Bed bugs will feed on any warm-blooded animal; they do not prefer one over another but will feed on humans if other hosts are unavailable. By spreading out into the surrounding area from the bed itself (the mattress) they become increasingly more difficult to control as time goes by because there is no longer a defined perimeter where all of them are located at once — as there would be with an infestation that occurs only inside a single room in an otherwise clean home or apartment building.

Immature bed bugs have a different appearance than adults and do not possess both the adult’s brown coloration and fully developed features (tails, wings, alignments). Bed bug eggs are translucent at first but become yellowish as they mature. Newly hatched nymphs will be all white or nearly so; older nymphs will be more translucent.

Symptoms may take between minutes to days to appear and itchiness is generally present. Some individuals may feel tired or have a fever. Typically uncovered areas of the body are affected. The reaction usually lasts for about one week.
