Bed Bug Detection
Bed bugs are blood-feeding insects.
Bed bugs are blood feeding insects that can cause itching and irritation. The bites contain anesthetic, anti-coagulant, and other chemicals that cause itching, burning sensation, and redness. They feed on human or animal blood usually at night by piercing the skin with their mouthparts. Bed bugs can live for months without feeding if they do not have access to a host. They are usually active at night but they may sometimes be active during the day as well.
Female bed bugs lay hundreds of eggs in a lifetime.
A female bed bug lays at least one egg per day, and may lay several hundred eggs over the course of her lifetime. Eggs are deposited in a variety of places, including cracks and crevices around baseboards, electrical outlets, furniture joints, behind wallpaper seams or under carpet edges. Bed bug eggs can also be found on rough surfaces such as window sills or under door moldings where they are not easily noticed. One or two eggs may also be laid singly on smooth surfaces such as painted wallboard or metal surfaces to which it is difficult for them to attach themselves.
Eggs are laid on a variety of surfaces and hatch after 6 to 10 days.
You’ll know that your home has bed bugs if you find any of the following evidence:
- Live adult bedbugs hiding in furniture or cracks in your wall.
- Dark stains on mattresses, box springs, bed frames and headboards from bed bug droppings. The droppings look like small black dots or rusty-colored spots.
- Bedbug cast skins (exoskeletons) that are left behind after molting and have a shiny appearance when new but become dull as they age.
Bed bug bites can sometimes cause skin irritation.
Bed bug bites can sometimes cause skin irritation.
Bed bugs bite humans to feed on their blood, but they are not known to spread disease. The most common symptoms of bed bug bites include itching, swelling, and a red rash at the site of the bite. Bites may appear in lines or clusters, and they may take as long as 14 days to develop. Itching and welts are also common symptoms of bed bug bites. Bed bugs do not transmit diseases; however, their saliva contains anticoagulants that keep the blood flowing while they feed on it. This prevents the host from clotting too quickly so that more time is available for feeding (and thus reproduction).
Treatment involves physical, chemical, and/or thermal controls.
If you do find evidence of bed bugs in your home, treatment involves physical, chemical, and/or thermal controls. Some examples of physical control methods include vacuuming up the insects and their eggs; washing any linens or clothing that may have been infested with hot water (130°F) and drying them on high heat; using a hand steamer to kill any stubborn insects; sealing cracks and crevices around baseboards and window sills to prevent new eggs from reaching inaccessible areas where it can be difficult or impossible for pesticides to reach them; removing clutter from the floor so that there are fewer places for bed bugs to hide; thoroughly cleaning all surfaces often with a vacuum cleaner set on high suction mode; sealing used furniture such as mattresses before putting them into storage until they can be properly disinfected by a professional pest control specialist. Chemical control methods may include dusting cracks between walls with boric acid powder mixed into an adhesive such as flour paste (which prevents the powder from being carried away by air currents), spraying residual insecticides over all surfaces in infested rooms after vacuuming them thoroughly first (to ensure that no live bugs remain hidden), applying pyrethrin-based products directly onto mattress seams where bedbugs tend congregate at night when we aren’t sleeping directly above them (this will also help mask odors associated with dead bodies). Thermal pest management involves heating up entire buildings very quickly until temperatures inside rise above 120°F—a temperature at which most life stages cannot survive long enough for us humans
Check regularly for bed bugs
- Check regularly for bed bugs. Bed bugs are harder to find than other pests, but it’s important to do regular inspections of your home. Look in the following places:
- Cracks and crevices around baseboards, window frames, and doors; behind wall-mounted light switches; in electrical outlets; under loose wallpaper; behind loose flooring planks or carpeting tack strips (pull up a corner of the carpet); inside cracks in furniture legs or casings.
- Under furniture and beds — look for cast skins (exoskeletons), fecal spots, shed skins and egg cases (looks like clear or white rice-like grains). You may also see live bedbugs feeding on blood from humans or animals during daytime hours if they’re active.
- In other rooms of your home — check out suitcases, backpacks and other personal belongings that might be stored away from where you sleep at night such as closets or hallways where kids’ toys might gather dust bunnies over time too!
