They make it hard to sleep at night and they keep you up while they crawl all over you. Fortunately, you now have a guide that can help save your time and money. I have put together all the tips and information, which will get rid of your bed bug problem.

Bed Bug Do It Yourself Pest Control

Step 1: Identification and Preparation

  • Identify and prepare

Before you begin, it is important to note that bed bugs have five stages of development: egg, nymph, immature adult, adult and reproductively mature female (called a “queen”). Understanding the lifecycle of these pests is essential because they cannot be controlled without knowing where they are in their lifecycle.

  • Bed bugs can live in homes in a variety of places such as:
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Headboards and foot boards of beds (especially metal frames)
  • Bed frames or headboards not attached directly to walls or floors but instead supported by legs or casters between floors or between rooms where ceilings meet walls (beds with drawers)
  • Dressing tables with mirrors attached to them
  • Wall hangings around beds
  • Bed bug bites may not be felt immediately since they inject an anesthetic when feeding on humans so that people don’t feel them until hours later when itchy welts appear on skin near bite sites 4

Step 2: Treating Cracks and Crevices

Now that you’ve dusted your furniture and baseboards, it’s time to treat the cracks and crevices in your walls.

A crevice tool is typically a narrow, hand-held plastic or metal tube with a pointed end. It can be used to apply insecticide dust or liquid insecticide into cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide out during the day, such as behind electrical outlet plates, picture frames, door casings and baseboards. If you don’t have a crevice tool available, you can use an old toothbrush instead.

Apply an insecticide dust or liquid insecticide by inserting the applicator tip into small gaps between wall fixtures (e.g., electrical outlets) or along floor molding around baseboards. Apply enough so that bait remains visible when dusting or spraying has been completed; this will help prevent future infestations by killing off any remaining eggs or nymphs still residing there after initial treatment

Step 3: Treating Upholstered Furniture

In order to treat your upholstered furniture, you’ll need:

  • Insecticide spray
  • Vacuum cleaner

Spray the insecticide directly onto the fabric and seams of the furniture using a small paintbrush. Alternatively, use a pump-up garden sprayer to apply it. Make sure that you thoroughly coat all areas where bed bugs could be hiding, including cracks, crevices and seams. Next, vacuum up any debris that has been disturbed by this process (you can clean this debris later). Repeat this process every two weeks until no new bites appear on your body for at least one month.

If you are unsure how much pesticide it takes to kill bed bugs in an area such as an entire room or sofa chair, test it first on a small area before applying it full force over the entire space like we did in our example above! It’s always better safe than sorry when dealing with chemicals like these!

Step 4: Treating the Mattress, Box Spring, Carpet, and Flooring

Now that you’ve treated the bed and furniture, it’s time to tackle the rest of your home. It’s important to ensure that all areas where bed bugs may hide are properly treated so they don’t come back or leave any eggs behind. Here are some things to do:

  • Clean Bed Linens and Clothing

Start by washing all sheets, blankets, pillowcases and clothing in hot water with detergent. Dry on high heat for at least 20 minutes (remember this is for cotton fabrics – other fabrics should be dried at a lower temperature). If you have a clothing dryer with an automatic cycle make sure it reaches 170 degrees Fahrenheit (77 Celsius) before removing from the machine. If not then place items into a hot clothes dryer set to “high” for 30 minutes before removing them from the machine. If using an electric steam iron set it on “cotton” setting and allow 1-2 minutes for sufficient steam penetration before removing garment from ironing surface.* While these steps may seem excessive they will help eliminate all traces of bed bugs if done correctly!

  • Remove Clutter From Your Home

Any clutter that could create hiding spots will need to be removed including boxes under beds/furniture etc., cracks along baseboards/wallpaper seams near floor level etc., loose wires sticking out of electrical outlets (these can trap young nymphs), air vents which are close enough together so they can crawl through one vent into another room without being seen (especially common when there are several rooms sharing one ductwork system). Once these areas have been cleaned up vacuum thoroughly using a HEPA filter vacuum as well as sweeping floors using stiff brushes/broom head attachments so as not miss any small crevices where bedbugs might hide during daylight hours.* Remember: The goal here isn’t necessarily just killing off any existing bugs but also preventing new ones from coming back!

Step 5: Cleaning the Home

Because bed bugs can live in your mattress, box spring and headboard, you will want to vacuum the mattress and all nearby furniture. You can also use a steamer or heat treatment on your mattress and other items that cannot be laundered (such as pillows). Be sure that you clean the entire area thoroughly before allowing people back into the room. You should repeat this process several times to ensure that all of the insects are destroyed.

Diatomaceous earth is an effective bed bug deterrent that can easily be vacuumed up after treatment.

Diatomaceous earth is an effective bed bug deterrent that can easily be vacuumed up after treatment. It’s made from the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of algae found in oceans. This natural substance can kill bed bugs by absorbing their waxy coating, causing them to dehydrate and die.

Does Diatomaceous Earth Kill Bed Bugs on Mattresses?

Diatomaceous earth has been used to treat for fleas and ticks for decades, but it’s only recently gained popularity as an effective means of killing bed bugs. Because there are no chemicals involved, it’s considered safe for use around pets and children (though you should still keep them away from your mattress until the dust settles). In fact, because most people do not react negatively to diatomaceous earth itself, it may be safer than other treatments with harsher chemicals like pyrethroid pesticides or boric acid powder.
