Pet dogs can be highly trained for weed detection, bomb detection and many other tasks. Besides, dogs are loyal animals who learn very quickly. This makes them one of the best pets for bed bug dog training. The dog has a powerful sniffer that helps it in bed bug detection. It can detect the bugs as soon as two or three days after they settle into a room. Thus, dogs make an excellent option if you want to get rid of the bed bugs from your house in an effective and efficient manner. Bed bug dog training, is more important than you might think. Many people don’t realize how many insects can be lurking in their house. Fleas, ticks, beetles and ants are just a few. All of which can cause all kinds of problems, if not treated. In extreme cases, some insect bites or scratches can even cause death! Bed bug dogs are trained to identify and alert their human handlers to the presence of live bed bugs or other objects contaminated with odor compounds that are secreted by bed bugs and their eggs in various stages of maturity. Bed bug dog training is a specialized form of dog training whose goal is teaching bed bug dogs to detect bed bugs in locations that have not been detected and treated before.

Bed Bug Dog Training Certification
Certification is the result of a comprehensive training program, which includes one-on-one training with a dog trainer. During this time, the dog must achieve and maintain a 95% accuracy rate in live bed bug detection. Dogs are trained to detect live bed bugs or viable eggs, but not dead bed bugs or feces.
Training a dog to detect live bed bugs is quite different than training a dog to detect drugs, explosives, or cadavers.
Training a dog to detect live bed bugs is quite different than training a dog to detect drugs, explosives, or cadavers. While there are similarities in the way dogs are trained to recognize the scent of bed bugs (with rewards offered), there are also some differences.
Dogs are not trained to detect dead bed bugs because they do not have any scent at all! Instead, dogs are trained to detect viable eggs and feces from live bed bugs. For example: if you were using your dog for bed bug detection in your home and he found an egg or two on one of your mattresses—that would be very good news indeed! That means that those eggs were laid by living adult female bed bugs at some point in time and now your little dachshund has just given you an early warning sign that something may be going on with those mattresses soon.
When using a dog for bed bug detection, a “positive alert” occurs when the dog indicates (passive) the presence of live bed bugs or viable eggs by sitting / scratching at the specific target location. This “positive alert” is followed by the handler conducting a visual inspection of the area to validate that bed bugs are indeed present.

A false positive occurs when an inappropriate target odor is identified by your K9 as being associated with bed bugs by your handler’s detection team (i.e., too much laundry detergent on clothes, food crumbs under kitchen cabinets). A false positive can also be caused when there are no live or viable eggs nearby but there has been some recent movement in that area by other people who may have brought small traces of dead eggs into their homes on clothing or shoes. In these cases, live or viable eggs may not have been deposited on surfaces where they would normally be found during normal activity within residential structures.
False positives can occur if the odor of dead bed bugs and / or feces is present. The dogs are not trained to indicate on dead bugs or waste (non-viable). This training method increases the accuracy and reliability of our canine teams in comparison to other methods of canine detection.

Bed Bug Dog training techniques have been developed to maximize the use of canine scent detection as well as reduce false alerts due to cross contamination, scent loss during travel, or exposure to other odors that may falsely be associated with bed bug infestations.
Upon completion of the training program, each dog must achieve and maintain a 95% accuracy rate during routine testing throughout their career.
Once you’ve completed the training program, each dog must achieve and maintain a 95% accuracy rate during routine testing throughout their career. These tests will be conducted by experienced staff members who are trained in the correct protocol to ensure that your dog is not being distracted by other things. We understand how important this is to you and your family, so we make sure that each test is performed correctly every time.
Dogs are good at finding things
You may be wondering why dogs are an effective tool in the fight against bed bugs. The answer is that they have a very good sense of smell, which means they can be trained to detect bed bugs even when there are only a few in a room. Dogs are also great at finding things when they’re hidden or not conveniently visible to humans. They have no trouble detecting that one small bug hiding behind the baseboard or in between two slats on your headboard!
The ability for dogs to sniff out bed bugs means you don’t have to wait until you see large numbers of them before calling in the professionals—you can call us as soon as you start seeing signs that there might be an infestation present (which is what we recommend).
