Bed bugs are causing more problems for people than ever before, and can be found in hotels, houses, apartments, dorms, and anywhere else where people sleep. That’s why it’s important to know how to find bed bugs early before they proliferate. Knowing if you have bed bugs is the first step in preventing their spread. Bed Bug Early Detection
Do Equipment Checks
If you are renting equipment from a lab, it is vital that you check the calibration of your equipment at least twice per year. Equipment that is not properly calibrated can lead to false results. If your lab uses an older model of equipment and does not have the ability to calibrate it themselves, they may be able to send you new reagents for free so that you can do it yourself or give them access to rooms with similar conditions as yours (temperature and humidity). This will allow them to keep track of how well their equipment is working throughout its lifespan.
In addition, make sure there are enough devices in each room so that everyone can work on one at a time without having someone else’s work interrupting them.
Finally, if an item breaks down during use or after being taken out of service for some reason (such as cleaning), do not attempt repairs yourself unless you are experienced with doing so; this could result in further damage instead of repairing the broken piece itself!
Know the Signs of Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that live in cracks and crevices. They’re most active at night, but since they feed on people while they sleep, it’s important to look for signs of bed bug activity during the day as well.
Fortunately, there are several telltale signs of bed bug infestations you can use to detect a problem before it gets out of hand.
- Look for blood stains on the sheets. It’s possible these stains won’t always be visible because the feeding process will cause them to blend in with your sheets or mattress coverings. However if you see any evidence of bloodstains or small dots resembling droplets of water (which may be caused by crushed bed bug exoskeletons), this is an indication that you have a potential bed bug problem.* Look for black spots on the sheets – Bed bugs excrete feces and other waste products wherever they go, so if you see black specks scattered across your sheets or mattress coverings (or even clustered together), these could indicate evidence of an infestation.* Look for insects eggs – Female bed bugs lay their eggs within 20 days after feeding; after hatching from these eggs, baby nymphs must feed within seven days before molting into their next life stage (i.e., first instar). These bites are usually found near seams where two pieces of fabric meet — like along seams where mattresses meet box springs — so if you notice tiny bumps along such areas that look like dots made by sewing pins

Know the Bed Bug Life Cycle
Effective bed bug control requires knowledge of the bed bug life cycle. Bed bugs have a complete metamorphosis with four stages: egg, nymph, adult and eggs. Eggs are laid in batches of 10-15 on rough surfaces such as wallpaper or floorboards. After hatching, nymphs molt five times before becoming adults. This process takes about one month under ideal conditions; however, it can take as long as two to three months for nymphs to reach adulthood during colder months when they have reduced activity levels. They shed their skin as they molt and will feed on blood to grow larger between molts until reaching maturity after the fifth instar stage at which point they can reproduce and start the cycle over again (if not trapped).
Bed bugs are hardy insects that can survive long periods without food by entering into a dormant state called aestivation (also known as diapause) which helps them survive extreme temperatures
Detecting the Bugs
You can detect bed bugs by looking for the bugs themselves, their eggs, and their shed skins. You’ll also want to look for any droppings they leave behind. Bed bug infestations also cause damage to your property and belongings, so keep an eye out for that too!
If you’ve encountered a bed bug infestation already, then it’s time to start hunting them down before they spread throughout your home. But don’t worry—we’ll tell you exactly how in just a bit!
Check Your Bedding
Bed bugs tend to hide in mattress seams and crevices, so check the bedding for signs of bed bugs. Look for:
- dried blood spots on sheets and pillowcases. Bed bug bites may look like a rash or mosquito bite, but the itching associated with mosquitoes subsides after a few days while the itching caused by bed bugs can last up to 2 weeks.
- black spots (bed bug excrement). While this is not always visible, sometimes you can see these small dark dots on your sheets or pillowcases if you shine a light at an angle inside your crevices. This is especially true if you have been bitten repeatedly over time and have left behind some of their waste material. These dark spots will be sticky when wetted and are usually stuck onto fabric surfaces rather than adhering directly to skin surfaces so don’t worry about getting any in your mouth!
- shed skins from nymphs (baby bed bugs). If you find one of these dried exoskeletons then there was probably an infestation nearby at some point within recent history since shed skins take quite a while before falling off naturally by themselves – they only fall off once they are fully molted into adults which takes roughly two months depending upon weather conditions during that time span!
Monitor Your Pest Control Program
Monitoring the effectiveness of your pest control program is an important part of preventing and treating bed bugs. If you think you have a bed bug problem, it’s important to know where to find them, how they move around, and what signs of their presence look like.
Bed bugs don’t travel from room to room on their own; they need human hosts to get from place to place. This means that identifying and inspecting possible sources of new infestations—such as discarded luggage or furniture—is critical for keeping your home free from infestation. Here are some things you can do:
- Inspect mattresses for signs of bed bugs (rust-colored spots) and eggs (small white dots). Check under mattress seams, around buttons or zippers, hand-tied corners, tufts and piping seams on box springs; also check headboards and frames for evidence of heavy infestation. If you find evidence of these pests in one room but none elsewhere in the house it’s likely that this was where they first entered into the home—if not right before then sometime within 24 hours after entering into another location based on research conducted by Drs Jessica Thomas & Patrick O’Neil using UV light traps designed specifically for such situations
Early detection is your best defense against bed bugs.
Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eradicate, so the best approach is prevention. If you can stop them before they get into your home, then you’ll be in a much better position than if they manage to infest your property.
However, it’s not always possible to prevent bed bugs from getting inside your home—especially if you live in an older building or area where bugs have been a problem for years. In this case, early detection can help keep the problem manageable during treatment and save time later on when trying to eradicate them completely.
