Bed bug egg casings are a breeding ground for new bed bugs. But not all casings equal – AKA they don’t look the same. If you have any of the following egg casings, then you need to start your treatment: Bed bug egg casings are part of the reproductive system of female bed bugs. Bed bugs do not need a male to reproduce, however; the males do play a role in the reproductive process. Let’s explore more about bed bug egg casings and their role in reproduction. So, you think you have a bed bug problem? You’ve checked everywhere and found no evidence of actual bed bugs, but then you start to see (or rather not see) tiny white dots. These dots are bed bug egg casings, more widely known as fecal bronzing. Most people who have a bed bug problem don’t even know they do until they start seeing the tiny bits that bed bugs leave behind. Ew.
Bed Bug Egg Casings
Bed bugs lay eggs which are encased in a sticky resin like liquid which hardens and becomes a casing.
Bed bugs lay eggs, which are encased in a sticky resin-like liquid that hardens to become the egg casing. Eggs are laid singly or in groups of 2 to 8 on rough surfaces where they remain stuck until they hatch. They can be found on bedding and furniture or in cracks and crevices around baseboards, electrical outlets, behind headboards and under carpets. Bed bug eggs are white to yellow in color and very small (about 1 mm long).
The casings are white to yellow in color and are very small, about 1mm long.
- The size of the casings are about 1mm long.
- The casing is white to yellow in color.
- It takes about 10 days for the eggs to hatch, then the nymphs will emerge and begin feeding on blood before molting again into another instar stage.
They usually hide the casings in their harborage areas, such as between mattress and box spring, or sofa cushions.
You can find bed bug casings in the following areas:
- Underneath the mattress where they hide and lay their eggs
- Between the mattress and headboard, such as under a seam or in a corner of fabric
- In cracks and crevices of the headboard itself, especially any exposed wood or metal (rarely found)
- In seams where cushions meet frames, especially when covered with fabric that conceals them from sight (very common)
Bedbugs also like to be near their hosts so they often reside near sleeping areas. They will move around within these harborages so you should inspect all possible hiding places thoroughly before moving on to other rooms.
An average adult female will lay 200 eggs in her lifetime.
When an adult bed bug lays eggs, she produces between 10 and 20 eggs in one batch. The number of eggs laid is dependent on her age and health, but also the amount of blood meals she has taken. If a bed bug population is well fed and healthy, it will produce more eggs than if it were to be underfed or unhealthy.
The average adult female will lay 200 eggs in her lifetime.
They use six different chemicals that can be detected by bed bug sniffing dogs to help find them.
Bedbugs use six chemicals to communicate with each other. These chemicals are:
- Isoamyl acetate, a chemical that smells like bananas. This is the most common chemical they use.
- Methanol, which smells like alcohol and is also found in some alcoholic drinks.
- Ethanol or alcohol, which smells like vodka or whiskey and is used as an antiseptic on cuts. It’s also found in cologne and aftershave lotion.
- 1-Octen-3-ol (or octanone), which smells like apples when crushed but has no smell when dried out; it also gives off small amounts of carbon dioxide every time it decomposes into carbon monoxide gas because it contains oxygen atoms from water molecules that were added during the formation of this insecticide compound by oxidizing enzymes present inside their bodies during digestion process when drinking water drips down through microscopic pores onto its feet after being consumed by insects such as ants etcetera…
The casings hatch in about 6 to 17 days depending on the temperature.
Eggs that do hatch usually do so within 6 to 17 days, depending on the temperature. The hatching time is dependent on temperature and humidity.
In warm weather, eggs typically hatch in 7 to 10 days while they may take up to 30 days at low temperatures. Hatching is delayed as the air temperature cools down during autumn and winter months.
It takes time for bed bugs to multiply but they can cause big problems when they do
When it comes to bed bugs, slow and steady wins the race. As a general rule, it takes about one month for a female bed bug to lay her first eggs. But those eggs won’t hatch for another month. And then it will take six more months for those babies to grow into adults that can start laying their own eggs…and so on and so on until you’re left with an infestation that has taken over your home in just under a year’s time!
So while this might seem like good news if you’re having trouble with bed bugs right now—they don’t reproduce at lightning speed—it means they are likely here to stay until you find an effective way of eradicating them from your property.

- THE NEW ZEALAND CASINGS CO edible, pre-flushed sheep casings for sausage otherwise known as Link Casings, Lamb Casing, Intestines, Sausage Skin, Small Sheep Casings or Hot Dog Casing make SLIM, TENDER & JUICY SAUSAGES. Great hot dog, chorizo, chipolata, merguez, chicken, pork, venison, lamb, beef or breakfast sausage casing. Certified Halal Casings.
- SUPERIOR SAUSAGE CASINGS These sausage casings are ‘A-GRADE’ (the best grade), 24-26mm / about 1” diameter (about the size of a quarter). They are pre-flushed and pre-tubed onto hard tubes, which makes them much easier to transfer onto your sausage maker nozzle and prevents annoying knots or tangles. With this 32ft sausage casing you can make approximately 7lb or 52 sausages.
- NO ‘SHORTS’ GUARANTEE We are proud to have a no ‘shorts’ guarantee for our products. Our casings are 32ft long which means less time, less wastage, less mess and better sausages for you. ‘Shorts’ are short casing off-cuts, which can be as short as 2ft. Some manufacturers package these up and sell them off to unsuspecting customers, so always read the fine print.
- WE BELIEVE NATURAL SHEEP CASINGS ARE THE BEST sausage casings for sausage making. Sheep casing has an amazing ‘semipermeable’ wall which breathes, meaning your beautiful cooking flavours can permeate the casing and infuse your sausage meat, they also have a delicate ‘bite’ and are less prone to chewiness than hog casings. The end result is a sausage with great flavour, juiciness and the much-prized sausage “pop” that you can only get from natural casings.
- NATURAL IS ALWAYS BEST Our products are naturally made by Mother Nature, not invented in a science lab. That’s why our sausage casings have only two ingredients – natural sheep casings and salt – and why we only source from New Zealand farms, where the animals are free range, grass-fed and fully traceable from farm gate to plate.
- -NEVER TRUST A STRAIGHT SAUSAGE If your sausage doesn’t smile, it’s made from a collagen casing. Collagen casings are usually made from the hides of cattle or hogs and a concoction of chemicals. They have a wall like soft plastic which means they don’t breathe in any beautiful BBQ/smoking flavours or match the all important ‘snap’ of a natural casing. They are also prone to splitting on the BBQ. So don’t settle for a sad, dry, tasteless sausage. CHOOSE A NATURAL CASING EVERY TIME.
