If you’ve been infested with bed bugs, you know that they leave a blood-red stain behind their bites. They also shed the exoskeletons of their young. The photo in this blog post shows some bed bug eggs (called nymphal skins or shells) in comparison to a penny at a staggering 25x magnification!  Bed bugs suck. No, really. Not only do they bite you all night, but they leave you red welts. And then there’s the whole thing about them sucking your blood (which is creepy when you think about it). Bed bug eggs are very small and difficult to see without magnification. A microscope can be used to examine these eggs, but a hand lens (magnifying glass) is sufficient for identification. The eggs are approximately 1 mm in length and are white to pale yellow in color (Figure 3).

After laying their eggs, female bed bugs will retreat back into the crevices where they spent most of their time during feeding periods; however, male bed bugs tend not to rest as much as females do meaning that males may still remain active even after laying their young (though this isn’t always true).

The number of eggs laid depends on the availability of food—if a female bed bug has plenty to eat on your body, she’ll likely produce more offspring than if she were only able to feed off the blood from one or two people per evening.

Bed bug eggs are very small; about 1mm in diameter and whitish-yellow in color (see photo above). A single female can lay hundreds at once and will continue laying them until she dies or becomes incapacitated by stress due to overcrowding or lack of food source(s) within her environment.
