Bed Bug Evidence
Bed bugs leave bites on your skin. These are usually in a line or group of three, and can look like mosquito bites, although sometimes their bites will be surrounded by a blood-filled blister or welt.
- Inspecting a room for bed bugs can be difficult, as they are small and sometimes hard to see. Look for evidence of their presence, such as bites on your skin, actual bugs, staining from feces and the bugs themselves (if you find one).
- If you do notice bed bug bites on your body after staying in a hotel or other public place like an airport or train station—or even if you just have a suspicious rash that looks like mosquito bites—take pictures of them with your phone so that you have proof if necessary.
You may see actual live or dead bed bugs when you inspect your hotel room.
If you’re staying in a hotel, it is possible that you could find bed bugs. In fact, if the previous guest had bedbugs and left them behind, there’s a good chance that they could still be there.
You should inspect your room before unpacking your things and sleeping in the bed. You may see actual live or dead bed bugs when you inspect your hotel room. They are usually found hiding near seams of the mattress, box spring and headboard; in carpeting; along baseboards; under tables and chairs; behind drapes/blinds/curtains; in lamps or light fixtures
If the room has been infested with bed bugs before, you may encounter signs of this.
If the room has been infested with bed bugs before, you may encounter signs of this. Bed bugs leave behind a shed skin when they molt and it looks like dandruff. You may also find blood spots on the sheets from when they feed. If you find one bed bug, there are probably more nearby!
Bed bug feces, which looks like little black specks, may be on the mattress, box spring or headboard.
Bed bug feces, which looks like little black specks, may be on the mattress, box spring or headboard. Bed bugs leave fecal smears when they move around on the bed frame and mattresses. Because bed bug feces are small in size (1/16 inch long), they can be difficult to detect without using a magnifying glass. Inspecting for bed bug feces is best done under a bright light with your eyes about 12 inches from the surface you are inspecting (about the distance between your elbow and shoulder) as this will help you see these tiny traces more accurately.
If you think you have found evidence of bed bugs in your home, there are several ways to test it:
- Use an adhesive tape trap (like Scotch Tape). Wrap a piece of clear cellophane tape around all four sides of a plastic container (Mylar bags work great here). Apply glue liberally to one side of the tape; place it sticky side down on a flat surface where no one will disturb it for at least 30 minutes; then lift up carefully to look at what was trapped underneath without disturbing any eggs or nymphs that may have been attracted by all that gluey goodness! Repeat this process at least twice per day for up to three days until no more bugs get stuck on top anymore…or unless something else starts getting stuck there instead!
They can leave behind stains on mattresses and upholstered furniture.
Bed bugs can leave behind stains on mattresses and upholstered furniture. If you see stains on these items, it does not mean that your home is infested with bed bugs. However, it does mean that the presence of bed bugs should be investigated further by a pest control professional.
There are other signs of bed bug activity that may be more obvious than stained fabric:
- Small brownish-red spots found on bed sheets or pillowcases (droppings)
- Live adult insects or their eggs (1/8 to 1/4 inch long) in cracks and crevices, especially along seams where two pieces meet (uncommon)
Do not assume hotel rooms are inspected regularly for bed bugs; do your own inspections.
Do not assume hotel rooms are inspected regularly for bed bugs; do your own inspections. Inspect the room before you unpack. Inspect the mattress, box spring and headboard; look for stains that could indicate bed bug presence. Inspect folds in bedding and curtains. Inspect furniture such as nightstands, dressers or chairs that have fabric upholstery or crevices where bugs may hide during the day (do not put these pieces against walls). Check cracks/crevices along baseboards, floorboards and window casings (bed bugs can easily hide in small cracks). If you find evidence of bed bugs, leave immediately without alerting anyone else to what has been found!
