What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are small, flat, brownish insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. They crawl through cracks in walls, floors and furniture to get into your home or apartment. They can also be transported in luggage and clothing.
Bed bugs usually scatter when they hear you coming but if you’ve noticed some of your furniture looking worn out, it could be a sign that something is feeding on it at night. If you notice little black spots around these areas, then you may have bedbugs!
Bedbugs can also bite humans but isn’t common because they’re an opportunistic feeder (they only feed when food is available) so people won’t feel it happening! But if one does bite a person and sucks their blood for several minutes which causes itchiness for days afterwards…
Are bed bugs harmful?
Bed bugs are not known to spread any diseases. However, they can be annoying and itchy bites may cause secondary infections from scratching the skin. The itching can also lead to insomnia and stress for those who are bitten by bed bugs. In some cases, people have developed an allergic reaction to the bites of a bed bug bite (ideally you won’t be one of them).
How do I know if I have bed bugs?
You can tell if you have a bed bug infestation by checking for:
- Bed bugs or signs of bed bugs (ex. eggs/feces).
- Bites on your body. If you wake up with small bites on your skin, this could indicate an active or potential bed bug problem in your home. You may also feel like something is crawling on you during the night.
To check for signs of bed bugs and eggs, look at:
- The surface of mattress seams where they are often found hiding during the day, especially near the top edge where sheets are tucked in under it. Look under pillows and sheets as well as along mattress seams and inside cracks in furniture legs where they hide during the day. Keep in mind that since they’re so tiny, it’s often very difficult to see signs of them without using a magnifying glass (or even better yet—a microscope), but there will be evidence like fecal stains where they’ve been feeding or cast skins from molting nymphs
What should I do if I have bed bugs?
What should I do if I have bed bugs?
It is important to contact an exterminator immediately and follow their instructions. You should wash your bedding and clothing in hot water. If you are able to, vacuum your home with a professional-grade vacuum cleaner before discarding the bag outside. However, some experts advise against this because it may just make more of the bugs available for someone else to collect and bring into their home! Once all traces of bed bugs are gone from your home, it’s important to avoid bringing items into the home that could be infested (such as secondhand furniture).
When should I call an exterminator?
You should call a professional exterminator if you:
- Find bed bugs or their eggs.
- Find bed bug excrement, which looks like small black dots.
- Experience unexplained bites, especially on your face, neck and hands. These bites usually occur in a row or in clusters of three to four bites in a single area of your body. Bed bug bites can be itchy and painful to some people but not everyone gets bitten by these insects while they’re sleeping on infested mattresses and box springs; other people have no reaction at all when bitten by the pests that live in mattresses because they don’t react strongly enough to cause irritation for most people — only about 25 percent of those who are bitten experience itchiness immediately after being bitten by them! If left untreated for long periods of time however (weeks/months), then it may become difficult for some people’s immune systems control their reactions after being exposed repeatedly over time due to having no previous experience with these kinds of insects before coming into contact with them again later down this road…
Why can’t I get rid of the bed bugs myself?
Bed bugs are really good at hiding. They can be found in the seams of your mattress, waiting to feed on you in the middle of the night, but they often hide during the day as well—sometimes even when it’s light out!
The problem is, you can’t see them during those times because they’re so small. Bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed when they’re adults and their eggs are even smaller than that (about 1/16th of an inch). When these tiny creatures are hungry, they’ll find a place to hide so they don’t get caught before they can eat again. Bed bugs might live off human blood alone while they’re growing up, but once they reach adulthood and start laying their eggs, it’ll be easier for them if there’s another animal around that has some blood left over after feeding on humans—like dogs or cats—to feed on as well. That way there will always be more food available for baby bedbugs who aren’t ready yet but need nutrition too!
How do you stop a bed bug infestation from returning?
While bed bugs can be very difficult to eliminate, there are steps you can take to prevent an infestation from returning.
- If you have been professionally treated for bed bugs, follow all of the instructions given by your pest control company. This includes taking care not to bring any items into your home that may carry live or dead bed bugs in them, such as furniture or clothing.
- Make sure all of your belongings are clean and dry before putting them back into your house; this will help keep further breeding from occurring on these items.
- If possible, seal up any cracks or crevices around window frames and doors so they cannot enter again through those routes.
Bed bugs are difficult to eliminate but the best option is to call a pest control professional
We strongly advise against attempting to eradicate bed bugs yourself. The methods you could use, including natural remedies and pesticides, could be very dangerous for you and your family members. If you have recently discovered that you are dealing with bed bugs in your home or hotel room, we recommend that you call a professional pest control service immediately.
