Bed Bug Hiding Spots

Bed bugs are one of the most common household pests that homeowners have to deal with. It does not matter if you live in a new home or an old home; bed bugs can still make their way into your abode. If you think that you have bedbugs, it is important to be able to identify their hiding spots and not only do away with them, but also prevent future infestations. Bed bug bites can cause a rash, itching, and even an allergic reaction. If you do have bed bugs in your home or hotel room, knowing their hiding spots means you have half the battle won already. Here are 19 common places to look when trying to uncover bed bugs.

Bed Bug Hiding Spots

Box Springs

Box springs can be a hiding spot for bedbugs. Bedbugs are small and flat, so they can hide in the cracks and crevices of a box spring. This is especially true if you have an older model of box spring, which has wooden slats that bedbugs can hide behind. A newer model would not have these wooden slats to serve as a hiding place for bedbugs.

If you find yourself in need of new furniture or are considering getting rid of your old furniture and replacing it with new furniture, keep in mind that this may be an ideal opportunity to get rid of any potential infestations before they get worse by purchasing new furniture without wood parts (like shelves).

Headboards

If you’re going to inspect your headboard, first make sure that it is not attached to the wall (or floor) in any way. Headboards are a favorite hiding place for bed bugs, who can be found in any material—wood, plastic and cloth included. Bed bugs can also be found in the joints and cracks of a headboard.

Inspecting for bed bugs on your headboard is very simple: Shine a bright light behind the board so that you can clearly see through it without having to lift the cover up or remove anything from under it. You’ll want to look at both sides of each joint where two pieces meet (for example: if there are four wooden slats forming a rectangle around one another). Look carefully at these areas because they’re often where flat-pack furniture will have been assembled together cheaply with staples or glue instead of screws.

Screws

Screws are hardware that hold things together. They can be found in the headboards, footboards, bed frames and nightstands of your home. If a screw is loose or missing it can leave an opening for bed bugs to crawl into. This will give them access to your bed without being seen by you or others in your home.

Mattress Padding

Mattresses are a common hiding place for bed bugs because the padding provides them with a dark place that is also close to their prey. The foam in mattresses can offer an ideal environment for bed bugs to survive, reproduce, and feed on humans.

The foam in your mattress can trap heat and provide a hot spot where you sleep at night. For example, if you have a pillow top mattress with gel-infused memory foam on top of it (like this), then there are two potential places where bed bugs could be hiding: the space between the mattress and box spring or inside your pillows themselves (since they’re filled with tightly packed feathers). If you have any type of pillow other than down or synthetic down pillows, then it’s more likely that any bed bug infestation came from inside one of those since those types would allow easier access from below through cracks between layers.

Bed bugs tend not to climb very much so if there isn’t an obvious way into or out of your pillowcase (or other fabric items such as comforters) then chances are good that they haven’t found their way into these areas yet—but if something breaks then it will become easier for them!

Mattress Tags

  • Carefully remove the mattress tag.
  • Take a close look at the stitching. If there are any holes, look inside and inspect the seams of your mattress for bed bugs.

Seams

Seams are the perfect hiding spot for bed bugs. Whether it’s a seam on your mattress, or the seam of an armchair, bed bugs can fit into even the tiniest of spaces and live there without detection. They may also hide in seams of bookshelves, magazines, newspapers and drapes. Bed bugs will even crawl under stapled items such as posters or pictures to avoid being exposed to light and heat sources. One way you can protect yourself from bed bug infestation is by removing all stapled items from your home before traveling away from it for any period of time since chances are that these insects might find their way into your luggage when you pack up for vacation.

Cracks and Crevices of your Bed Frame

  • Look into the joints of your bed frame. Bed bugs can enter through the smallest opening, so peek in between or around any cracks or crevices of your bed frame. If you see any signs of bed bug activity (discoloration, eggs, fecal matter), it’s likely that an infestation has developed and you should contact a pest control professional immediately.
  • Check under baseboards for other hiding spots. Bedbugs tend to congregate in tight spaces near their food source—you! So if you have them under your bed or dresser, they may also be hiding behind baseboards or in gaps between floorboards and walls where there is no wall covering left intact by carpeting to hide behind laminates/wood paneling/etc., which gives them access to space underneath floors where they can feed undetected when people aren’t sleeping on beds anymore at night time (or during day time hours unless someone peeks under there).

Learn where bed bugs hide so you can keep them out of your house.

If you don’t know where to look for bed bugs, it’s going to be difficult to get rid of them. So, let’s take a look at some of the most common places that bed bugs like to hide.

Bed bugs are most active at night when their human hosts are sleeping and not paying attention. They usually stay in their hiding spots during the day, but they can come out if you’re moving around too much or if you have an exterminator coming in. Bed bug bites will still show up even if they were hidden under your mattress or elsewhere nearby while you were sleeping because they bite throughout the night while people sleep soundly (and unaware).

You should be able to see bed bugs with your naked eye; however, since they’re small (about 5mm long), it may take some practice before you are comfortable recognizing them by sight alone rather than just feeling something move on your skin in response to being bitten by one! Even though they tend not to travel far from their hiding spots without an invitation from humans who sit down on furniture or other areas where these insects might have previously been found – such as mattresses – there are a few places where we often miss seeing signs of infestation until after our homes have been contaminated by these pests:
