Customers have been asking me for a bed bug information pamphlet for tenants. As a courtesy, I’ve decided to provide one for them. It’s convenient, easy to read and no-nonsense. It’s not meant to scare them, just give them the basics on what they can do if they suspect their home is infested with bed bugs. Bed bugs are a growing problem in major cities across the United States. Here is a pamphlet on bed bugs that you can give to any tenants that you may have. You can be sure they will thank you! Enjoy! If you’re a tenant and absolutely cannot afford the cost of bed bug treatment, there are things you can do prevent an infestation from starting…or at least stop one from getting worse.
Bed Bug Pamphlet For Tenants
Bed bugs are a tenant’s worst nightmare. They’re creepy, they’re crawly, and they become increasingly more difficult to eliminate over time. So, it’s important that you know how to detect them early and take steps to prevent them from ever getting into your apartment in the first place.
Bed bugs are a tenant’s worst nightmare. They’re creepy, they’re crawly, and they become increasingly more difficult to eliminate over time. So, it’s important that you know how to detect them early and take steps to prevent them from ever getting into your apartment in the first place.
The problem is that bed bugs are hard to detect—if someone has an infestation, you may never even know about it until it is too late. That’s why we’ve put together this pamphlet for tenants like yourself who want a better understanding of these pests and how best to deal with them if they do appear in your home or apartment building.
What Exactly Is a Bed Bug?
Bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, but they can be very difficult to get rid of once they have infested your home. Bed bugs feed on human blood and are commonly found in places where people sleep or sit for long periods of time.
Bed bugs are small, flat insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. They live in cracks and crevices near their hosts’ beds or nesting sites—such as mattresses, bed frames and headboards—often close to where people sleep or rest. Adult bedbugs are reddish brown in colour while nymphs (immature bedbugs) resemble adults but without fully developed wings. Nymphs may be mistaken for ticks because they appear similar to ticks when viewed under a microscope; however, unlike ticks, nymphs do not carry disease-causing pathogens like Lyme disease bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi). The adult female lays about 500 eggs during her lifetime which hatch into immature stages called nymphs within 10 days after being laid
How Do I Know If I Have Bed Bugs?
- Look for signs of bed bugs in your apartment.
Signs that you may have a bed bug infestation include bites, blood stains and small black dots on your mattress. If you see any of these signs, be sure to check all areas of your apartment.
- Check your bed, sofa, chairs and other areas where you spend a lot of time.
What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?
Bed bugs are very flat and oval-shaped, but their color can vary from red to brown, depending on how recently they have fed. Bed bugs have been known to be as small as 1/4 inch and as large as 7/16 inch. Their bodies are covered in short hairs which help them move about more easily inside the mattress or chair.
If you suspect that your home is infested with bed bugs, there are certain signs that will help you determine whether or not this is true:
- Tiny blood spots on sheets or mattresses
- Small brownish dots on sheets or mattresses (excrement)
- A musty odor coming from your mattress or furniture
How Big Are Bed Bugs?
Bed bug size is one of the first things to consider when trying to determine if you have bed bugs. After all, if you don’t know how big they are and what they look like, it’s impossible to identify them. Adult bed bugs measure about 5/16″ in length, with females being slightly larger than males. Eggs are even tinier—about 1mm long—and larvae only grow up to 3mm in length before molting into nymphs! The only way you can get an idea of what these critters look like is by using a magnifying glass or microscope; otherwise they’re too small for us mere mortals to see with our eyes alone!
What Does a Bed Bug Bite Look Like?
Bed bugs bites can be:
- Itchy. You may not feel the bed bug bite but see an itch or rash on your skin.
- Red bumps and/or red welts that look like mosquito bites (though smaller). Some people do not get any reaction at all, so it’s important to pay attention when you’re checking for them: If you see something that looks like insect bites or rashes, especially in straight lines or small clusters on your face, neck, arms and legs – a possible sign of bed bugs!
How Do I Check for Bed Bugs in My Apartment?
- Bed bugs can be found in almost every room of an apartment, not just the bedroom.
- Check along seams, buttons, and tufts in mattress, box spring, and bed frame.
- Check behind baseboards, electrical outlets, and picture frames for signs of bed bugs feeding on the wood near it. The most common hiding spots for bed bugs are cracks or crevices around piping (especially at the joints), behind loose wallpaper/wall hangings where there’s no direct light source shining on them during daylight hours (such as under a large painting or mirror), in small spaces between furniture units away from any direct sunlight during daylight hours such as under a heavy piece of furniture like a table or desk where nobody may even think twice about checking out whether there are any pests there too
Okay … So Now That I Know I Have an Infestation, What Should I Do?
Now that you know you have an infestation, the most important thing is to not act rashly. A bed bug infestation is serious, but it’s also manageable. Here’s what you should do:
- Call your landlord immediately and ask them how they plan to handle this issue. It may be possible for them to send an exterminator out right away—this isn’t always true if they don’t offer pest control services themselves, but it could be helpful if there’s a special deal on services right now or something like that.
- Don’t try to treat the problem yourself. You can read more about why this is a bad idea in our previous pamphlet “Can I Treat My Bed Bug Infestation Myself?” (available here).
- Do not throw out your bed (or any furniture) before getting rid of bed bugs! If you have time before being able to dispose of items from your home or apartment unit, carefully double bag them and store them somewhere where other tenants won’t see them until after treatment has been completed; that way no one else will mistakenly think those items are infested when they might not be.*
How Can I Keep My Apartment Free From Bed Bugs?
Traps are not a long-term solution to bed bug control. They are only effective in catching live bugs and do not prevent the movement of other stages such as eggs, nymphs, or adults.
Bedbug traps can be used in conjunction with other methods of treatment or to help determine if you have an infestation.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to bed bugs.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to bed bugs. If you’re thinking about renting from a landlord, ask them if they have ever had bed bugs in their building. If so, find out what kind of treatment was used to get rid of them and how effective that treatment was.
You should also inspect your apartment thoroughly before moving in (and at least once every week). Look on floors, furniture, beds and baseboards for signs of bed bug activity: small rust-colored stains or spots; dark fecal material; live adult insects; molted skins; egg casings; or even just piles of dead bodies! If any signs are found, notify your landlord immediately so steps can be taken to stop the infestation from spreading further than just one room—and contact us as soon as possible if there are more than five live adults present at any time during daylight hours.
If you suspect that you have been bitten by one or more bed bugs while living in an apartment building within our jurisdiction (which includes all but three townships located directly west), contact us right away so we can start helping getting rid yourself quickly and efficiently–through both chemical treatments as well as heat treatments–from this terrible pest problem!
