Bed bugs are nasty, blood sucking little pests. It is important to take the necessary precautions for preparation for bed bug treatment. The last thing you want is a bed bug infestation. When getting ready for bed bug treatment, you need to take some precautions. There are some steps you’ll need to take to try to keep bed bugs away while you get prepared. It isn’t easy especially if you have a bed bug infestation at home. I’ve seen bed bugs penetrate the most seemingly impossible to breach areas. I have seen bedbugs survive in temperatures close to forty five degrees below zero. I have seen bedbugs survive twenty minutes of total submersion in water. What I haven’t seen is a homeowner completely prepared for the treatment of these vile creatures! Without proper preparation, the outcome will not be what you want or need. It’s as simple as that.
Bed Bug Preparation For Treatment
Wash And Dry All Bed Bug-Infested Items At High Temperatures
- Wash and dry all bed bug-infested items at high temperatures. All clothing, linens, and other fabrics that are in contact with the infestation should be washed in hot water (at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit) and dried at high temperatures (at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit). You can also dry clean or steam clean these articles of clothing. If ironing is necessary to remove stains or wrinkles, use as high a temperature as possible on the iron setting. After ironing, place each item in a sealed bag for one week before storing it again.
- Throw out any furniture that cannot be washed or discarded outdoors immediately after you move out of your apartment unit because bed bugs may be living inside those items until they find another host.
Encase Mattresses With Mattress Covers
The first step in preparing for bed bug treatment is to encase your mattress in a bed bug proof cover. You should be able to find these at most department stores, and they should cost less than $50. Make sure that the covers have been lab-tested and are deemed waterproof. This is important because you do not want water getting into the seams of your mattress and rendering it useless after treatment has been completed (or making a mess). Additionally, if you intend on washing your sheets or vacuuming inside your encased mattress, make sure that these things are safe for use on an encased mattress!
If you’re worried about getting trapped underneath these covers (as some people are), look for zippered covers that allow you easy access but also protect against bed bugs getting inside of them as well as other insects such as dust mites or pollen which could cause allergic reactions later on down the road if left unchecked by proper sealing methods like those outlined above.”
Separate Items Into Two Piles: Clean And Dirty, Infested Items
- Separate all items into two piles: CLEAN, and INFESTED. Do not mix items from different rooms, floors or units together, or from different buildings or households in one pile. Do not mix clean and dirty clothes together in one pile.
- Put infested clothing and linens directly into the washer or dryer on the hottest setting possible, then wash them again at least once more with hot water and detergent (using a commercial laundry detergent that contains enzymes). Dry any fabrics at high heat for 30 minutes to kill bed bugs before storing them away.
- Remove clutter from closets so you can more easily inspect each item as it comes out of the washing machine; put anything too big to fit through a vacuum tube onto plastic sheeting so you can dispose of it later outside your building (don’t throw infested items down your garbage chute).
Remove All Clutter From The Floor And Furniture In The Bed Bug-Infested Area
The first step in preparing for bed bug treatment is to remove all clutter from the floor and furniture in the bed bug-infested area. Clutter provides great hiding places for bed bugs and should be removed, especially if it cannot be treated or cleaned. If there are items that have to be thrown away because they cannot be treated or cleaned (e.g., stuffed animals), make sure you do so before beginning any treatment efforts.
Clean Your Personal Belongings That You Will Take With You During Treatment
It is important that you clean and dry all of your personal belongings before bringing them to the treatment center. This includes:
- Your clothing, bed linens, towels and other linens
- Curtains, pillowcases or other fabric used as part of the bedding set (comforter, fitted sheet)
- Stuffed animals or pillows that cannot be washed in hot water (because they could melt) should be placed in tightly sealed plastic bags for transport. They can also be heated with a blow dryer on high heat prior to transportation if they are not machine-washable materials like stuffed cloth toys or pillows.
Remove Wall And Floor Hangings
If you have wall hangings or large furniture items, such as mirrors or paintings, you will want to remove them. The main reason for doing this is that bed bugs can hide behind and under these items. You should also take pictures of the wall hangings before removing them so that you know how they looked originally and what they looked like after being cleaned. This will help you remember how to put them back in their original position when the treatment is over.

- Clean all areas where you may have seen signs of bed bugs: crevices near baseboards, walls and floor voids; under beds and furniture; behind curtains or other hanging items; around electrical outlets; inside dressers, nightstands or other furniture such as chests where they may hide during daylight hours (bed bugs are nocturnal)
- Remove all clothing from drawers or closets and bag them in plastic bags that can be sealed tightly when sealed shut (for example garbage bags)
