A Bed Bug under microscope. This picture taken by a guy who bought it from me to check what he thought was a small flea on his arm turned out to be a bed bug! As you can see, they are the size of an apple seed. He was really impressed by how small they were, so he took some pictures of it under the microscope and later uploaded them onto the internet so everyone could see what they look like. Have you ever wanted to see what a bed bug looks like? Now you can with this 6-piece microscope set. With this detailed magnifier, you will be able to see every aspect of a bed bug including its body shape and legs as well as its eggs. This kit allows you to get an up-close and personal look at these pesky little creatures. You can view their anatomy and see how they move around. Bed Bug Under Microscope
Introduction
While dogs are known for their ability to sniff out bombs, drugs, and even cancer, researchers have discovered that they can also be trained to sniff out bed bugs. A new study published in the Journal of Economic Entomology shows that beagles can reliably identify bed bugs with nearly 100 percent accuracy.

A new study from Virginia Tech shows that beagles can sniff out bedbugs with almost 100 percent accuracy.
The research team found that dogs are far more effective than other detection methods, such as carbon dioxide monitoring and heat detection tools.
“Our results suggest that canine scent detection is an effective method for finding live or dead bedbugs in locations where they are likely to occur,” said Thomas Chouvenc, the study’s lead author. “These findings are important because there are currently no practical methods to detect live bedbugs.”
The study was conducted by the University of Florida, and the results were published in the Journal of Economic Entomology.

The researchers wanted to know whether beagles could be trained to detect bed bugs. They also wanted to know how well these dogs could learn which odors were associated with bed bugs, so that they could recognize those smells when they encountered them in new environments and situations.
To evaluate this possibility for their research purposes, the scientists began training four beagles — two male, two female — from puppyhood on scent-detection tasks related to bed bug detection. After three months of training and practice sessions at home with their handlers (volunteers who had been specially trained), one dog successfully identified all 15 scents out of a total 20 sample odors presented during an experimental trial; another three dogs identified 14 out of 20 sample odors correctly; while one dog only identified 13 out of 20 samples correctly.
The American Chemical Society funded the research because bed bugs can ruin your sleep and furniture.
Bed bugs are a nuisance because they ruin your sleep, cause anxiety and can be hard to get rid of. Bed bugs can be found in hotels, hospitals and college dorms. The American Chemical Society funded the research because bed bugs can ruin your sleep and furniture.
The study took two years to complete, and it used dogs trained by Insects Limited, an entomology services company in Indiana.
The study took two years to complete, and it used dogs trained by Insects Limited, an entomology services company in Indiana. The company used a “clicker-training” method that has been shown to work well with dogs.
Specifically, they trained the canines to identify three scents: live bed bugs, a piece of cardboard that had been lined with bed bug scent (which was then frozen), and plastic tubs that contained bed bug eggs or larvae. The dogs were then given 20 minutes at a time inside training rooms where they could either find or not find one of those three scents. If they found the right one, they received praise from their handlers; if not, they got nothing more than some water for their trouble. During subsequent trials during which no scent was present at all, researchers were able to determine whether or not each dog’s performance declined over time—it didn’t appear that this happened in any meaningful way—and how long it took them before being able rebound from failure.*
The team used live bed bugs that had been starved for a week and placed them on a piece of cardboard inside a plastic tub.
Bed bugs are small, brown and flat. They live in beds, under mattresses and in furniture. Bed bugs can be hard to get rid of because they hide during the day and come out at night to feed on you or your pets. A female bed bug can lay over 200 eggs at a time! Bed bugs can live for up to a year without feeding on your blood; this makes them very hard to get rid of!
Bed bugs bite people and animals by piercing the skin with their mouthparts through clothing or skin folds such as around the waistline of sweatpants, near seams or under arms/breasts/genitals (males only). They don’t fly or jump but instead crawl into cracks when they want to move locations within an area like a mattress or couch cushion where there is plenty of warmth for them to live comfortably.
Then they put a small cover over the bug-infested tub so when the dogs smelled it, they couldn’t see what was inside.
The dogs were trained to smell the bugs and identify them. They also learned to scratch at things they smelled. Next, they put a small cover over the bug-infested tub so when the dogs smelled it, they couldn’t see what was inside. Then they took off the cover while only one dog watched, and he quickly pounced on it in excitement. This proved that he had identified his target by smell alone without any visual cues!
Dogs were asked to identify whether or not there was a live bed bug present in each tub.
Dogs were asked to identify whether or not there was a live bed bug present in each container. If they identified it, they scratched at it; if not, they moved on to the next tub.
The researchers found that dogs were able to identify bed bugs with 96% accuracy. The researchers also recorded which specific smells the dogs could pick up and what their reactions were when presented with those smells.

Rosen says that dogs are trained to sniff out bed bugs in all sorts of environments: homes and hotels, for example. A dog’s nose can detect the scent of a single female bed bug sitting still on a wall or floor up to 100 feet away—so even if you don’t see them crawling around your mattress or getting into your luggage when you travel, your dog should still be able to sniff out any hidden stowaways.
An average of 96 percent of the time, the dogs knew whether or not there was a bed bug in each container.
To test the accuracy of the dogs’ ability to identify bed bugs, they were given containers that contained either live or dead bed bugs. The dogs’ job was to tell their handlers whether or not there was a bed bug in the container by using their body language (barking and scratching).
The researchers found that when it came to identifying live bedbugs, the dogs knew where they were 97% of the time. When it came to identifying dead bedbugs, the dogs knew where they were 95% of the time. And for identifying whether or not there was a live or dead bug in a container: 96%.
It’s important to note that this study focused on one group of specially trained pups; it’s possible that other breeds would have different levels of success with this kind of task (for example, your family dog might not be as equipped as these well trained German shepherds).
Bed Bugs Suck!
Bed bugs suck. They can ruin your furniture, sleep and peace of mind. You don’t want them in your home, but they can be found in hotels, airplanes and even your own home. Bed bugs are hard to get rid of because they hide in cracks and crevices that are very difficult to reach with insecticides or steam cleaners. Bed bug infestations have been reported all over the world: Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada… just about everywhere!
Conclusion
Let’s hope the dogs can help get rid of bedbugs!
