So we decided to come up with our own recipe that actually works and it is super cheap!
You can make a lot of it for very little money and it will last you at least a few months. You can use the solution to wash your dog and your home, as well as the bedding, toys and any other things that come into contact with the fleas.
It’s also not toxic if you get some in your eyes or mouth (yep we tried).
Here it is:
To make your own flea wash, you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup of baking soda
- 2 cups of warm water
- 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap (any kind will do!)
To mix these ingredients together, just combine the baking soda and warm water in a bowl. Then add the dish soap and stir until it’s all combined.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that absorbs moisture and neutralizes odors. It can also be used as an anti-inflammatory, which makes it useful for treating skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. The exfoliating properties of baking soda can be used to treat dandruff or people with seborrheic dermatitis (a scalp condition that causes redness and flaky skin).
If you have pets, you know how important it is to have a dog wash product that will eliminate fleas while keeping your pet clean during bath time. If you’re looking for something safe to use on your fur baby (or even yourself), consider trying one of these products:
1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide (3%)
Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant that can be used on your dog’s skin to kill fleas, ticks and lice. It also kills mites, fungus and bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide works by breaking down the cell walls of organisms causing them to die. It also breaks up organic matter like blood clots in wounds so they can be washed away with water (this is why you should never use hydrogen peroxide on open wounds).
1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap (blue Dawn works best)
While all dish soaps are useful for flea control, you should be careful about which one you use. You’ll want to choose a product that is concentrated enough to work effectively on your dog’s coat and skin, but not too concentrated—or else it may irritate their skin or the shampoo could leave behind a residue that attracts fleas. Blue Dawn is famous for its ability to remove grease from dishes and hands, but when used on dogs it can also help get rid of pesky pests like ticks and fleas.
In other words: just use 1 teaspoon of any liquid dish soap!
Directions:
- Dilute the shampoo in warm water.
- Wet your dog’s fur, then apply the diluted shampoo to his skin and coat. Work it into a lather, making sure you get all parts of him that will be exposed to sunlight later in the day (ears, nose, paws).
- Rinse thoroughly until there is no suds left in his fur.
-Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle and mix them together well.
- Don’t use a metal spray bottle. It can be harmful to your dog’s skin, especially if it gets into their eyes.
- Don’t use a plastic bottle that has been used for chemicals. You don’t want to put something that is toxic on your dog’s body.
- Don’t use a glass bottle or one with metal parts in it as these could shatter when you mix the ingredients together and then accidentally get onto your dog’s fur or skin later on (especially if they’re wet).
- If you have an old aerosol canister around the house, don’t use that either! Aerosol cans are flammable and should never be used around dogs because they contain propellants which are extremely volatile chemicals (like propane) that can cause serious burns if inhaled by animals – even those who seem unharmed at first glance like cats do after being sprayed by one of these products!
