Best Essential Oil Bug Repellent

However, many of these products contain chemicals that can be unhealthy or dangerous for you or your family. If you want to protect your family from mosquitoes and other biting critters while still keeping everyone safe, essential oils may provide the solution you’ve been looking for.
Citronella
Citronella is a plant-based oil that is used to repel mosquitoes and other insects. It’s an essential oil with a fresh, citrusy scent. - Diffuse peppermint oil for about 30 minutes to 1 hour or until the smell dissipates (depending on the size of your room).
- Add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to an unscented lotion or natural body butter. This will not only help keep insects away but also moisturize your skin as well!
- Mix 1 cup water with 3-5 drops of peppermint essential oil and spray onto skin when outdoors or near bugs.
Lemongrass Essential Oil
Lemongrass essential oil is a natural insect repellent that repels mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. It works best when diluted with a carrier oil or lotion such as coconut oil or olive oil. You can also add lemongrass essential oil to your homemade bug spray recipe for added protection against the bugs that are bugging you.
Some other types of pests that lemongrass can help ward off include: ants, flies and moths. Lemongrass essential oil is safe for both humans and animals (including pets).
Geranium Essential Oil
Geranium essential oil is a great option for repelling mosquitoes, flies and other insects. Geranium essential oil also repels ticks, fleas and other pests. In fact, geranium essential oil has been proven to be one of the most effective natural insect repellents!
Clove Essential Oil
It can be applied directly to the skin, diluted with a carrier oil and then applied to the skin, or even diffused in a room. Some common ways to use clove essential oil include:
- Dilute 10-15 drops of clove essential oil into 2 tablespoons of carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, sweet almond or olive) and apply on your body or clothes as needed.
- Apply 1-2 drops of clove essential oil on each wrist where you will be applying perfume or cologne; this helps enhance its effectiveness by adding an extra layer of protection against mosquitoes.
- Diffuse 6-10 drops of clove essential oil in an ultrasonic diffuser for 30 minutes while you sleep at night time (or go out).
Catnip Essential Oil
Catnip essential oil is a natural insect repellent. Catnip essential oil has been used to repel mosquitos, flies, ticks and fleas. It can also be used as an effective alternative to DEET!
Catnip essential oil works by causing insects to become disoriented or confused when they smell it so they do not want to come near you.
This will work best if you rub the catnip on your skin or add it into your bug spray mix before spraying yourself with it (just make sure not to get any in your mouth).
Basil Essential Oil
Basil oil is a great choice for repelling mosquitoes, ticks, gnats and flies.
