Ants don’t have an actual digestive system like humans do; instead, they digest food outside of their body and absorb nutrients through their skin or mouthparts. If a certain type of ant (the termites) are especially hungry, they’ll chew on wood or other materials to get at the nutrients inside them—and that’s when we smell that distinctive musty odor!
