Imagine if an ant walked up to you and said, “Hey buddy, I need to know if ants can see?” You would probably be like, “Why are you talking to me? It’s not like I’m a scientist or talk to ants.” But that would be pretty bizarre if one of the many ants living in your home came up to you and started asking you questions. Why? Because most of the time we just don’t think about ants. They are too small for us to pay attention to them. Have you ever wondered whether ants can see? Of course you have, who hasn’t? I know when I first started pondering the greater questions of ants seeing and also ants choosing of their outfits, I began to question my place in this world. I knew things weren’t right, but was unable to understand why. It wasn’t until recently that positive proof led me to the conclusion that ants do indeed see, and other major insect groups (as well as reptiles) see as well.
Can Ants See
Can Ants See?
We’ve got the answer!
That’s right, folks. We’ve done the research and we have an answer to one of life’s most important questions: can ants see? The answer is yes, ants can see. They have eyes that are made of many tiny lenses (called ommatidia) that work together to create a composite image for the ant.
Ants also have compound eyes, which means they are made up of thousands of tiny lenses instead of just one. This helps them see better and move quickly in their environment.
So there you have it! Can ants see? You bet they can!
Do you ever wonder what it’s like to be an ant? What do they see when they look at the world around them?
We do, too! We’ve had this question on our minds for a long time. And so we decided to find out for ourselves.
We went outside, found some ants and put them in a jar. Then we took a picture of them through a magnifying glass and looked at it closely. What did we find? Well, turns out ants can’t see very well at all! They can only see things up close and everything else is kind of blurry to them. So if you’re an ant walking around looking at the world through your antennae, the world is quite different than the one we see with our eyes—it’s all just blurry shapes!
