Cockroaches have survived in space before, but no living creature has ever actually lived there long term. The lifecycle of a cockroach is tied to the Earth and its atmosphere. When exposed to space, cockroaches usually do not survive for long as well. It should be remembered that living creatures cannot live in outer space without an atmosphere because gravity is essential to life as we know it. This means that cockroaches and any other creature cannot live in space unless they are inside a spaceship that is designed to have the correct atmosphere for them. Cockroaches have not traveled around space to study the effects of zero gravity on them but that doesn’t mean you can’t simulate it at home to see if your roaches could survive a space mission. Cockroaches are one of the most adaptable creatures on earth. This does not, however mean they can withstand any temperature especially if brought from the extreme heat or the extreme cold to either of those extremes. First, let’s talk about the smaller, more unconventional space creatures. Cockroaches are often brought up in this discussion because cockroaches are super-resilient little buggers. They’ve been around for a very long time, and they’re so adaptive that you can find them all over the place — from your garbage bin to the inside of your house. And it appears that in outer space, cockroaches can survive exposure to solar radiation and microgravity pretty well, too! A recent experiment by a group of scientists may give sci-fi fans some hope for future space and interstellar travel. The scientists placed cockroaches in a space simulator to test if certain insects could survive the kind of G-forces that astronauts have to endure when entering space. They wanted to determine if certain small and hardy life forms could make the trip beside humans. The results are somewhat encouraging, so cockroaches might be able to survive in space after all.
Cockroaches Can Survive In Space
- Cockroaches can survive in space!
- This is because they have a high resistance to radiation and can survive for up to a week without oxygen, a week without food, and even a week without water.
Cockroaches Can Survive Without Oxygen
When you and your cockroach began the journey towards outer space, you may have had some concerns. Would your cockroach survive the depressurization of the capsule? Would there be enough oxygen in the compartment? What about food and water?
But don’t worry—cockroaches are often survivors, and yours should be no exception. A common misconception is that cockroaches can’t live without oxygen for any length of time, but this is untrue! Cockroaches can actually hold their breath for up to 30 minutes at a time. They are capable of doing this because they breathe through holes in each segment of their body called spiracles (also found on human lungs). These pores then connect to tracheae tubes that transport air down into the rest of their body. This means that even if a portion of their body is blocked off from air, they can still stay alive by breathing with other spiracles farther back (you can see why these hardy insects were able to survive a nuclear explosion!). It’s also worth noting that cockroaches are very good swimmers, as they can hold their breath underwater for up to half an hour as well!
Why Are Cockroaches So Hard to Kill
Cockroaches have a high tolerance to radiation and a reputation for being able to withstand extreme temperatures, so it’s no surprise that cockroaches are also very hard to kill. Their bodies are extremely resilient in general, which means if you hope to get rid of these pests with pest control chemicals or other methods on your own, you might want to think again.
Cockroaches are fast. Cockroaches are good at hiding and can be great at seeking out food sources, including the burrowing into woodwork where they feast on the cellulose inside the wood itself. They can survive without food for months at a time, even up to a year!
Cockroaches Most Likely Won’t Wipe Out Humanity
While cockroaches might be able to survive in space, they won’t be able to do much once they get there. When you think of all the things that cockroaches need to survive, it’s clear that we humans have them beat.
- Cockroaches can’t eat our food: They can only eat things that are decaying or rotting; if they got into our houses, they’d starve to death since most human food is stored in wood pantries and cabinets—which cockroaches can’t digest.
- Cockroaches don’t like us: Because of their tough exoskeletons, cockroaches overheat faster than we do, so a human house would be too cold for them. They also aren’t poisonous or aggressive towards humans. In fact, because even bugs have a natural instinct not to fight battles they’re unlikely to win, cockroaches would probably flee any humans who tried to come after them in space!
Cockroaches are hard to kill, but they are not going to take over the world.
Cockroaches are able to withstand extreme temperatures, including the cold of the Himalayan Mountains, and the heat of deserts. They can survive underwater for hours and without oxygen for 45 minutes. Perhaps most remarkably, in 2007 scientists discovered that cockroaches could breathe through their butts, so they can actually survive in space.
Other than extreme radiation, there isn’t much that will kill a cockroach. They have a hard exoskeleton that protects them from most predators and their own crushing strength (they can carry 30 times their body weight).
If a roach does lose its limbs during an attack or fall from on high it’s able to regenerate them within weeks. Cockroaches are immune to more than 60 pesticides and toxins, so don’t try to kill them with bug spray; you’ll just make it mad and give it superpowers as it becomes resistant to your poison!
