Before we read this article, we were sure that it is impossible to be allergic to fleas. However, when we have studied the scientific researches and evidences, it has been established that it is possible for people to be allergic to these small creatures. Flea bites are extremely itchy and uncomfortable, so it’s no surprise that many of us are curious to know if there are human allergies to fleas. The answer is unfortunately yes, but don’t worry because the vast majority of humans can tolerate a few fleas. You may have been bitten on the heel by a flea and you have a small red lump and you notice that your hair is falling out. Many people believe that once they are bitten by a flea, they will never get rid of them. This is far from the truth, in fact, being allergic to fleas is rare. This post comes from a discussion I recently had with a friend on Facebook. She stated she and her husband have lived in their home for 30 years and the house was always bug free until about a year ago when she suddenly began to get bug bites all over her body. She said nothing has changed: The house is clean; she doesn’t leave dirty dishes or towels lying around; and there’s nothing new, such as an addition, that might attract bugs. Flea allergy is a common skin allergy that can affect both pets and people. In humans, flea allergy is generally not of a very serious nature, but for some individuals it can do a lot of harm. The symptoms vary from person to person based on their sensitivity level to fleas.

• Itchiness, redness and inflammation of the skin. This can lead to open sores and crusty skin.
• Hair loss from scratching and rubbing at the itchy areas.
• Fleas can carry bacteria, which if introduced into your bloodstream through a bite or scratch, may cause infection in dogs or cats who are allergic to them (flea allergy dermatitis).

Treating the fleas

If you want to get rid of the fleas in your house, there are several steps you can take. First and foremost, you should vacuum every day. Fleas are small and like places without a lot of sunlight, so they tend to hide in dark corners of the home. Vacuuming will help remove them from those areas and keep them from coming back.

Next, it’s important to wash all bedding and towels that have been on the floor at any point during this process (all carpets as well). Make sure that these items aren’t washed with other laundry until they’ve been aired out for 24 hours; otherwise, fleas could survive by hiding inside them until they’re brought back into contact with warm human bodies again. Finally, if possible try not to bring any new animals into your home for at least two weeks after getting rid of all existing ones; this will give time for eggs laid over previous months (which may remain viable) to hatch before being exposed again by new arrivals.

Fleas can transmit diseases, such as plague or murine typhus, which is spread by fleas infesting rodents such as rats and mice. Flea bites themselves cause an itching sensation but also cause allergic reactions in some people: if you’re bitten by a flea that has previously bitten someone with allergies to insect bites (such as cat allergies), then you may develop your own allergy to insect bites through what is called cross-reactivity between allergens (the proteins in an allergen causing your immune system to react).
