Can you get sick from a spider bite? It does seem unlikely, doesn’t it? Spiders are tiny creatures that are only capable of carrying the harm so much that it could make you scratch your skin. However, there is one species of spider whose venom contains properties that can even kill you. This article takes a look at this phenomenon as well as what to do should you be bitten by an arachnid. If you’re still reading this, then one of two things happened: either you’re in a panicked frenzy, trying to find out if being bitten by a spider will cause you to get sick and die, or you want to know if your friend’s story about being bit by a tarantula and getting sick was true (spoiler alert: it probably wasn’t). Everyone gets bitten by at least one spider in their life. But what if you get bitten by a brown recluse spider? Will you die from the effects of a brown recluse spider bite? Today, we are going to talk about what happens when someone gets bitten by a brown recluse spider. What Symptoms Does A Brown Recluse Spider Bite Cause? When you are bit by a brown recluse spider, it usually feels like a pin prick. It may take up to 12 hours after being bit for you to experience any of the symptoms associated with a bite from a brown recluse. This is because it takes the poison produced by the brown recluse to work through your system. If you are facing a severe spider bite, it is imperative to seek immediate medical attention. This is important for two reasons: One, bites can involve bacterial infections and diseases – such as Lyme disease – that require treatment with antibiotics. And two, the effects of a spider bite vary from simple itching and mild discomfort to muscle damage and even loss of limb.
Can You Get Sick From A Spider Bite
Introduction
There are almost 50,000 species of spiders in the world. Of those, only about a dozen have venom that is deadly to humans (the rest are just painful). In the United States, there are only two types of spider that can cause serious harm to humans: black widows and Brown Recluse spiders. The former is easily identified by its telltale red hourglass shape on its back; the latter has a dark-brown violin shape on its back. Both can be identified by their longer body length (about an inch or so), with females being particularly large. The most common symptoms from a bite from one of these spiders is pain, swelling and redness around the area of the bite. In some cases, you may also experience chills or fever, abdominal pain and muscle cramps—all signs that your body’s reaction to the venom is beginning to affect your entire system. If you feel any of these symptoms after getting bitten by a spider, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately as they could be signs of a systemic reaction called latrodectism which requires hospital treatment.”
False Widow Spider
If you are bitten by a false widow spider, it may cause:
- Breathlessness, chest pain, swelling or tingling in the area of the bite.
- A painful bite that can last for days. This is because black widow bites are extremely painful and can be mistaken for being caused by bees. People who are allergic to bee stings could react in this way too, as black widow venom contains similar compounds to bee venom. Black widows also produce necrosis as part of their bites (meaning they will damage tissue). If you have been bitten by a false widow spider and notice any unusual bruising around where you were bitten and severe pain which lasts longer than 24 hours, see your GP immediately as it may be dangerous to ignore these symptoms!
Brown Recluse Spider
You should know that the brown recluse spider is found in warm areas of North America, and is identified by its dark brown color. A bite from this spider can cause what’s known as necrotic wounds—a condition in which dead tissue dies around where it was bitten, leading to an open sore that may take a long time to heal. The wound is painful and often develops into a large ulcer.
The venom released by these spiders can also cause other symptoms, such as:
- Fever
- Muscle pain
- Nausea or vomiting (vomiting more than once)
If you notice any of these symptoms following a bite from a brown recluse spider or another species of spider, consult your doctor immediately.*
Black Widow Spider
- Black widow spiders are the most dangerous spiders in the US, and they have a neurotoxic venom that is 15 times as powerful as a rattlesnake’s. They’re notorious for their red hourglass shape on their abdomen (the color varies from black to yellow), and they can be found almost anywhere there are humans.
- A black widow bite usually isn’t deadly to healthy adults, but it can cause severe pain and muscle spasms if it does turn out to be fatal. The venom causes paralysis by interfering with nerve signals sent to muscles, which leads to difficulty breathing or speaking. If you see one of these spiders near you or your family members, it’s better not to risk getting bitten: call someone else who has experience handling insects such as pest control professionals or exterminators instead!
Hobo Spider
- The hobo spider is also known as the aggressive house spider. It’s common in the northwest united states and western canada, and they typically nest in places like basements, garages, sheds and cellars.
- The hobo spider is considered a venomous species but it’s not aggressive and rarely bites people. The bite itself isn’t harmful but if you’re allergic to the venom then there could be complications from your injury.
- This species of spider isn’t dangerous so don’t worry about having one living in your home or garage!
The Symptoms of a Bad Spider Bite
Spider bites are not usually considered dangerous. The most common spider bites—even from the brown recluse and black widow—are only mildly poisonous and not a medical emergency.
However, there are some other spiders whose bites can be more serious and even life-threatening. These include the funnel web spider of Australia, the Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria fera), the Australian redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti), and several South American species. For example, one study found that around 7% of people bitten by a Brazilian wandering spider die from their injuries within two hours!
Another study looked at 1,000+ cases of venomous spiderbites in patients who survived those attacks; it found that symptoms included itching, redness and pain around where you were bitten or stung for about 24 to 48 hours after being bitten or stung by one of these dangerous types of spiders. However this is only true if you are allergic to their venom (which is rare).
When to Seek Medical Attention
If you are bitten by a black widow or brown recluse spider, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. If you are bitten by a hobo spider and develop a necrotizing ulcer, it is also recommended that you seek medical attention.
If you believe that you have been bitten by a black widow or brown recluse spider and are experiencing nausea, vomiting, headache or abdominal pain (especially if the pain is severe) seek medical care immediately.
The most dangerous spider bites are rare, and you can prepare for them.
If you were bitten, the first thing to do is apply a cold compress to the area. Then take an antihistamine like Benadryl or Claritin (both available over-the-counter). If the bite is on your hand, keep it elevated above your heart and rest it by your side until symptoms subside.
If you experience any serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swelling of your tongue or throat that makes it hard to breathe and talk, seek immediate medical attention. You may have been bitten by a spider whose venom causes severe allergic reactions in some people. In this case, emergency treatment for anaphylaxis may be needed—you could need epinephrine shots from an EpiPen (a device used to deliver medicine quickly) before your body goes into shock from lack of oxygen due to swelling in the throat area caused by severe allergic reaction symptoms.
Most spider bites are harmless and can heal on their own without medical intervention; however there are exceptions—some spiders are more dangerous than others because they possess potent venoms that cause life-threatening injuries when injected into humans
Conclusion
There’s no shortage of spiders out there and it’s understandable to be scared of them, but their bites aren’t usually harmful. Many species of spider are venomous, but only a few have venom that can actually harm you. The most common culprits are the widow spiders and brown recluse spiders, although none are very prevalent in the UK. If you do get bitten by a spider, don’t panic. Apply pressure to the wound with a bandage and seek medical attention if there is any swelling or discolouration.
