Clothing With Bug Repellent

For the longest time, I had been searching for clothing with bug repellent. I looked at countless stores and read countless articles that just didn’t make sense to me. That’s why I’ve put together this guide so you can have all the information you need when you are shopping for clothing with bug repellent. If you live in an area where bugs, mosquitos or other irritating insects are all too common, buying clothing with bug repellent will make your life a lot more enjoyable. Traditional bug spraying can expose you to harmful chemicals. Clothing with bug repellant is your best option for taking care of pests while also getting fashion-forward! Insect repellent is supposed to keep away bugs and insects, but what about clothing that repels the creepy crawlers? I’ve been seeing a lot of clothing with bug repellent on it lately, including shirts, hats, bandanas, socks and more. I didn’t know if they really work or not until I tried a few out. As summer is approaching you may be planning on taking a trip to a warmer location (not me, I live in Florida). In some areas of the world there are clothes that have been treated with chemicals through a process called Insect Repellent Clothing. This process helps to repel specific insects such as ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, lice and flies.

Clothing With Bug Repellent

Introduction

Although we’re about to be hit with a cold winter in Canada, unfortunately, mosquitos are still with us. The health risks associated with mosquito bites cannot be underestimated. From West Nile Virus to Lyme Disease, it is essential that you protect yourself from the bite of these annoying insects. Fortunately, Health Canada has approved the use of permethrin-treated clothing as an effective alternative for repelling mosquitos and other insects. Let’s explore how this works.

Permethrin-treated clothing is the active ingredient in mosquito repellent.

Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that’s used in insecticide and mosquito repellent. It was first developed by the British Ministry of Defence in 1964 and commercialized in 1982 as an insecticide for killing ticks, mites and lice on animals. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies permethrin as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

The EPA warns that exposure to permethrin can cause skin irritation or rashes, headaches and dizziness when inhaled over time. If you’re applying permethrin-treated clothing to your skin, it may be absorbed into your bloodstream through your skin pores — but it isn’t likely to cause any long-term health problems unless you have a pre-existing medical condition like asthma or hay fever.

Health Canada approves the use of permethrin on your clothing to repel insects.

In Canada, the use of permethrin is regulated by Health Canada. The chemical is approved for use on clothing to repel insects such as mosquitoes and ticks. Permethrin is not approved for use on skin, but if it comes into contact with your skin, it can cause mild irritation. The main side effect from permethrin exposure is a rash or hives along with mild itching if you come into direct contact with it. For this reason, chlorine bleach should be used to wash any clothing treated with permethrin once the treatment has worn off—it’s important that you don’t wear these clothes after they’ve been treated until they’ve been cleaned thoroughly to remove any residue left behind by using chlorine bleach!

How to treat your clothing?

Treating your clothing as well as other fabrics is a great way to keep bugs from biting you. You can treat your clothes with permethrin, which is a repellent that will keep mosquitoes away for up to 70 washings. To treat a garment, follow these steps:

  • Place the item in the dryer and set it on low heat for 15 minutes to remove any wrinkles or creases
  • While still warm, use a brush to apply Permethrin spray evenly over both sides of fabric (do not saturate)
  • Allow item(s) to air dry

How often should treated clothing be retreated?

There are two main factors that determine how often clothing needs to be retreated: how often you wear it and the kind of textile. Some clothes can go for years without needing to be retreated, others require more frequent applications. The label on the clothing will tell you how long each application lasts, but even if your garment has gone through all its applications and not been cleaned for 6 months or more, don’t worry about it. It does not mean that your garment is no longer effective at repelling mosquitoes!

Also keep in mind that as long as there is some DEET left on the fabric, it will continue to provide some bug protection. You can test this by rubbing a damp paper towel over treated areas of your clothing – if there’s still any residue present, then bugs won’t want to land there anymore because they’ll get bitten!

There are effective ways to protect against mosquito bites while outdoors.

If you’re planning to spend time outdoors, there are effective ways to protect against mosquito bites while enjoying the great outdoors.

Permethrin is a chemical that repels insects and is approved by Health Canada for use on clothing. It can be sprayed onto items like jeans, shirts, socks and hats. Permethrin-treated clothing is effective against mosquitoes for up to 70 washes (or three months) and other biting insects for up to 40 washes (or two months).

Conclusion

Clothing with bug repellent is an effective way to repel mosquitoes and ticks. The active ingredient, permethrin, is the same one that is used in many insect repellents. This treatment will last through five or six washings and should be reapplied as needed to continue controlling insects on your clothing.
