Coyote Peterson Fire Ants

Coyote Peterson Fire Ants are the vicious little red ants you typically find in the southern region of the United States. They love to get in your pants and bite. They have been known to cause victims to go into anaphylactic shock and even die from ant bites. Coyotes are pretty cool, but it’s hard to compete with massive colonies of social insects. In fact, these ants build large habitats that can stretch for miles. I went to a place in Georgia called the Black Rock Desert to try and catch them doing their thing. And boy did I find some things! Imagine you’re strolling along a grassy field, enjoying the weather and warm sunlight. Suddenly, from out of nowhere a fireball shoots up into the air and lands in front of you with a “thump.” At first you might think it’s a meteorite or some other extraterrestrial object. But this is not the case. In fact, it’s something far more dangerous – an aggressive ant colony called fire ants. About once every year, as the weather heats up in Florida, coyotes will be burrowing beetles start to wander around. These beetles are rarely seen by anyone except for the coyotes that catch them, who often eat them right away and dig a hole after doing so. On multiple occasions I have found a rather large hole with a single coyote sitting on the dirt mound that the hole creates. This intrigued me, I wondered if they were hiding the fact that they had just eaten something from others of their own kind.
