The three most dangerous cockroaches, the American, the German, and the Oriental cockroach carry pathogens like salmonella, dysentery and hepatitis B according to a study by Auburn University. The American cockroach is present in all 50 states but are found living in damp basements and sewers in the southern and central US.  Did you know that the most deadliest species of roaches are native to the North America? Well I didn’t (until I started researching). In fact, these cockroaches can grow from 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches long. And their saliva and feces contains a toxic substance called cymol that can make humans and animals very sick. Cockroaches are pests that infest homes and facilities such as apartments, warehouses, seaports and food establishments. While most consider them a nuisance pest, they are also domestic pests that are not easily eradicated by usual home and garden sprays, dusts or baits. Cockroaches can carry bacteria, cause allergic reactions from droppings, skin and saliva. People who have allergies can suffer because of cockroach infestations. Studies show that 90% of homes in the United States have growing populations of German roaches.  Cockroaches are critters that many find disgusting and pesky. This was an accurate sentiment prior to 1950, but fortunately better understanding of biology and chemistry has led to a variety of very effective pest control products. The import question for the average homeowner is “what do I need, and what’s most effective?”

Deadly Cockroaches

There are few insects that are as universally reviled as the cockroach. They can be dangerous to your health and they’re incredibly tough, which makes getting rid of them a challenge. But did you know that some species of cockroach can actually be deadly? Let’s take a look at some of the deadliest cockroaches in the world (yes, “world” is necessary).

Death’s head cockroach

• The death’s head cockroach is a common pest in homes and businesses. They can be found in the bathroom, kitchen and other rooms that contain water or food.
• These roaches are very difficult to get rid of because their ability to hide makes it hard for you to see them before they eat your food or damage your property.
• Death’s head cockroaches can carry bacteria that cause infections if they bite someone or crawl over an open wound on the skin. They may also transmit asthma-inducing allergens through feces and body parts left behind from shedding their skin as they grow into adulthood.*

Asian cockroach

The Asian cockroach, Blattella asahinai, is a species of cockroach that lives in sewers and drains. It can carry diseases and live for up to a year without food.

The Asian cockroach can be found in homes if the building has an infestation of the American roach. This roach is active at night and will hide during daylight hours. The Asian cockroach has wings but cannot fly very far or high; it uses its wings for balance when running away from danger or mating with another male or female. Female Asian roaches are larger than males because they need extra space for their egg sacs which contain 40 eggs each (depending on how many times they mate). After being born, these baby roaches will grow up to be adults within 1 month!

American cockroach

The American cockroach is the largest cockroach in the US, measuring about 2 inches long. They are commonly found in sewers, trash cans and basements. This species is more likely to be found in the southern US, but has been known to spread northward during warm summers. The American cockroach is mostly brown or tan with hints of red or yellow on its wings and legs

Smoky brown cockroach

A smoky brown cockroach can cause food poisoning if it contaminates your food. Food poisoning is dangerous and potentially fatal, but it’s hard to see how this would happen with a roach. When you see the roach, you can just kill it and throw away your food!

But what if you don’t catch the roach before he gets to your kitchen? He might have already contaminated some of your other groceries by walking on them or dropping saliva onto them while eating. If that happens, then when you go to eat that food later on—maybe even weeks later—you could be in for a nasty surprise.

This type of bacteria called Salmonella lives inside the intestines of humans and animals; they get into our bodies through foods we eat (usually meat) or water we drink that has been contaminated by animal feces (like dirty spatters).

Australian cockroach

The Australian cockroach, Periplaneta australasiae, is the most common cockroach in Australia, and has been introduced to other countries including New Zealand, Hawaii and North America. It’s also known as the waterbug and is called a “giant among roaches” because it can grow up to 5 cm long (about 2 inches).

The Australian cockroach has ashy grey wings that are folded around its body when not flying. The body is reddish-brown with a yellow stripe down each side and two stripes on top of each wing case.

The female lays more than 30 eggs at a time in an oval capsule that’s about 1 cm long (0.4 inch). The eggs are whitish-yellow at first but darken after four days. They hatch in three weeks if they’re kept at 27 degrees Celsius (80 Fahrenheit).

Some cockroaches can be deadly.

Cockroaches are known to spread bacteria, viruses, parasites and worms. They can also carry fungal infections that cause skin rashes in humans.
